For many farming families, succession planning is something that's always important, but rarely urgent.

There always another season, another project, another reason to push the conversation down the road. That's why the news of the 26-27 Federal Budget is so important.

From 1 July 2027, changes to Capital Gains Tax will come into effect, creating a defined 14-month window for families to review succession plans, ownership structures and future asset transfers.

For some, that may feel like another layer of complexity in an already complicated process, which is understandable.

For families who have been putting succession conversations on the back burner, this may be the nudge needed to start talking about what comes next.

I always say to my clients that the best outcomes usually come from having enough time to explore your options rather than reacting to a deadline.

Late last year, I joined Daniher's Drive – a four-day journey through regional Victoria, raising funds and awareness for FightMND.

Motor Neurone Disease is a cause that's personal to me, so being part of this event meant more than I can put into words.

What struck me most wasn't just the fundraising – it was the people. The stories shared, the communities we visited, and the sense that we were all part of something bigger than ourselves.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared their stories, and attended the Blue Denim Disco at the Bolt Inn in Uralla.

I recently spent a week on the road in Victoria visiting clients, catching up with old friends & family, and stopping by my old stomping ground at Marcus Oldham.

Most of our work happens over Zoom, and that works really well for many families. It gives people flexibility, keeps things moving, and means we can stay connected no matter where everyone is.

That said, this trip was a good reminder that there’s also real value in meeting face to face – getting to see the farms and meet the people we’re working with in person.

During the week, I asked a few families how things were feeling before and after working through the Farm Transition Blueprint. A few of the responses really stayed with me:

“We used to feel uncertain — now we have a plan.”
“We’d been stuck for years — now things feel fair.”
“Mum and Dad feel better knowing retirement is clearer now.”

These comments are a reminder that succession planning is about more than just numbers. It’s about creating clarity, easing pressure, and helping families move forward together. It's also the why behind why I love what I do.
