HOPe in our Community
Heart of Peace (HOPe) was inaugurated in October 2022 as the charitable arm of the Catholic Diocese of Armidale. Its primary function is the serving of hot midday meals each Wednesday to the community in Tamworth. In addition to a hot meal, it has been a core mission of HOPe to spend time with its guests providing friendship and support to those experiencing hardship or loneliness. In 2024 HOPe expanded to Moree providing the same support to the community there.
While continuing this mission, over time, however, HOPe has developed as a support agency in numerous situations and circumstances. While continuing with its core mission, HOPe has expanded to be the last resort ‘safety net’ when assistance is not available through any other support agencies.
Some of the ways that HOPe has evolved has been in the type of support being offered. For example, after a Friday evening Lenten ceremony at St Nicholas’ Church East Tamworth, several parishioners discovered a homeless gentleman who was taking refuge outside the grounds of the church—he had no food or place to sleep. As the ‘support agencies’ had closed for the weekend, HOPe was contacted to see what assistance could be provided. HOPe arranged accommodation, providing a safe place to rest over the weekend, until he was able to visit one of the other agencies for further help once things reopened on Monday. Food was also provided to see him through the weekend.
On another occasion, support was provided to two women with young children fleeing, unrelated, cases of domestic violence. Neither lady had accommodation, food, or means to access emergency support—they had no money, or access to funds. Neither had access to Centrelink at the time due to lack of identification. HOPe stepped in to help—emergency accommodation was found as well as vouchers for food were provided. At the first opportunity they were able to visit Centrelink to register for interim and eventual ongoing support, ensuring safety and wellbeing for themselves and their children.
Lastly, our most recent form of assistance, was providing crisis assistance to a displaced family in the remote west of our Diocese. On a Saturday evening HOPe was phoned by NSW Police looking to secure emergency food and accommodation for this family. HOPe was able to use its contacts and local resources to secure food and accommodation at very short notice.
HOPe continues its mission, guided by the Gospel, through the generous support of many volunteers and organisations. HOPe is grateful for the support of ADIG, one of its founding partners. In 2025 ADIG has renewed its support for HOPe, donating $6,000. With every ADIG Bonus Saver Account opened, ADIG makes a donation to HOPe. By supporting the ADIG you are supporting and giving HOPe to your community.
