For accounting and SMSF practices, that means TFNs, bank details, payroll data, tax returns, workpapers and fund records, all moving between staff, software and third parties.

With Cyber Security Action Month starting, here's one step to take this week: enforce multi-factor authentication on every platform that touches client data. Email, practice management, cloud storage, client portals and SMSF administration software. Prefer authenticator apps or hardware keys over SMS codes, which can be intercepted or bypassed through SIM swapping and phishing.

Then tighten the access behind the login:

• Apply least privilege: staff only see the files their role needs
• Remove leavers the same day
• Turn on alerts for new devices and unusual locations
• Ask your outsourced providers where your data is stored, who can access it, how it's shared and what certifications they hold

SMSF contribution caps have moved for 2026–27.

The concessional cap is now $32,500 and the non-concessional cap sits at $130,000, with bring-forward arrangements allowing up to $390,000 for eligible members.

Every October, the SMSF sector splits into two groups.

Some firms move through the annual return deadline without much disruption. Others spend the final weeks chasing auditors, tracking down member statements, and hoping the ATO shows some leniency.
The 31 October deadline itself, which applies to self-lodging and newly registered funds, isn't really the issue. It's what shows up when admin capacity hasn't kept pace with the workload. Compliance status changes, lost access to rollovers and employer contributions, and failure-to-lodge penalties are the result, not the cause.

There's also a timing detail firms often underestimate. An SMSF audit must be finalised before the return can be lodged, which means the real deadline is whenever your auditor needs the financial statements, income statement, and member statements in hand. For most firms, that's now.

Firms that treat SMSF administration as something that can scale up when the workload demands it, rather than something fixed to whatever headcount they started the year with, tend to find October manageable rather than stressful.
