This Scams Awareness Week, it’s important to remember that a scam can happen to anyone – scammers do not discriminate. Family, friends, neighbours and colleagues can all be the target of a scam.

The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) received 6,706 scam related complaints in the 2025-26 financial year.

Of the scams reported to AFCA, the key scams targeting victims were fake products or services being sold on digital marketplaces, impersonation scams and invoice scams to businesses.

At Beyond Bank we want to equip you with the skills to stop a scammer in their tracks.

Making sure you are protected online and can recognise the warning signs of a scammer are the first steps to being scam safe.

Our Security Hub gives you the tips and tricks to make sure that you’re protected and know when to report something – especially if it seems too good to be true.

This week is National Scam Awareness Week.

So far, in 2026, ScamWatch has reported Australians losing more than $180 million to scammers. ScamWatch has had 108,910 scams reported to them.

But scams are not just about the numbers, it’s about the people behind the numbers.

This year’s Scam Awareness Week theme is, ‘no one’s just a number,’ reminding us that for every reported scam there is a person impacted by this scam – a parent, friend, neighbour or colleague.

Scams are only getting more sophisticated. AI is increasingly playing a role in this.

With AI, scammers can impersonate family members, make personalised messages and create opportunities that can seem very real.

Messages, phone calls, social media and emails can all be used to impersonate the people in your life. If you receive contact that is demanding you act quickly, always get in touch with them using a phone number or profile you know belongs to them.

Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Did you know that you can fundraise for your local community organisations just by saving your money with our Community Rewards Account?

Every year, we support 100s of community organisations across Australia because our members choose to bank using a Community Reward Account.

Through the Community Reward Account program, we are donating to more than 480 community groups who will share in donations worth over $910,000!

This year has been a record year for our Community Reward Bonus recipients and it’s all thanks to our members who bank with a bank that backs your local community organisations.

At Perth Airport you would find something that might be surprising to some – a Foodbank WA branch that provides access to food relief to more than 400 households daily.

While you might think that Foodbank WA only helps families put meals on the table, their work is much more than that. Foodbank WA, in collaboration with Financial Wellbeing Collective, provides additional referrals for those who are experiencing pressure related to rising costs in bills, rent, fuel and unexpected expenses.

At Beyond Bank, we hold the belief that backing our community organisations means that we support everyone in our community when they reach out to these organisations for help.

Over the next year, the Beyond Bank Foundation is supporting Foodbank WA with a grant valued at $57,000.

Through this grant, Foodbank WA will expand the Financial Wellbeing Officer service at Foodbank Perth Airport from operating three to now five days a week.

Apart from assessing clients’ needs and providing food relief access and vouchers, the Financial Wellbeing Officer is able to refer clients to financial counsellors who provide free, independent, confidential advice and advocacy to help people understand their options and improve their financial situation.

A recipient of the service said: “Having such an understanding and supportive person able to help relieve the extreme stress I was experiencing meant so much.”

Through this partnership, we aim to enhance financial literacy, reduce financial stress and increase the number of clients who can access this support.

Last Friday, Beyond Bank colleagues donned their woollies and joined Hutt St Centre for the Walk a Mile in My Boots.

More than 60 of our colleagues joined in the crowd of people who made the walk, raising funds and awareness for homelessness, with more colleagues doing their own walks in Victor Harbour and Gawler.

Rippling out into the crowd, our sea of purple showed up with banners, signs and enthusiasm; moments when we can come together like this remind us that our communities are bigger than us and supporting each other brings strength to all of us.

When reflecting on the work of Hutt St Centre, Beyond Bank CEO David Marshall says, “Community organisations, of which Hutt St Centre is one of the most impactful, are a foundation of our society and provide a really important safety net, and a place people can seek confidence and support. Beyond Bank is so privileged to have partnered with Hutt St Centre for over 10 years.”

Together, we raised more than $900 for Hutt St Centre, contributing to the more than $470,000 already raised.

The journey doesn’t stop there! Fundraising is still open, click the link to donate, and help continue the vital work of Hutt St Centre: https://bit.ly/45XcqA0

The communities we live, work and play in are stronger because of the community groups that uplift and support them.

Our local community groups are the unsung heroes who make sure that the local footy barbeque keeps going, who help us out when times are tough, and who raise awareness for causes that impact the lives of those around us.

The Community Achievement Awards, presented by Awards Australia are an opportunity for us to celebrate those local organisations whose work makes our communities better for all.

This year, Beyond Bank is presenting the Beyond Bank Community Group Award.

The award is for community organisations that give back to their communities and go above and beyond to create safe, happy and welcoming communities for all.

If you know an individual, community group, organisation or business making a meaningful difference, now is the time to nominate them.

Nominate a community achiever: https://bit.ly/4g6CXQl Leave your details in the form and the Awards Australia team will guide you through the process.

Together, let's celebrate our local heroes and the positive impact they have in creating welcoming communities for us all!
