On World Soil Day, we at alchemia-nova would like to acknowledge the fundamental role of soil in sustaining life and fostering agriculture. Here are some of our projects that reflect our commitment to sustainable practices and play a crucial role in improving soil health. 🌱🌍

🎯 The WATERAGRI project focuses on enhancing agricultural water management and preventing nutrient and topsoil loss to ensure sustainable and affordable food production in Europe. alchemia-nova, one of twelve solution providers, is specifically responsible for developing a bio-inspired, multi-layer drainage system. This system aims to capture nutrients from runoff, ultimately improving plant nutrient uptake and soil water retention. https://wateragri.eu/

🎯 In the Deep Purple EU project, municipal wastewater undergoes a unique process where it is volatilized using purple bacteria, yielding valuable by-products, including biofertilizer. Our primary objective within the DEEP PURPLE project is to leverage the biomass produced by purple bacteria (PPB), a renewable material, as a rich source of carbon and minerals for the creation of organic fertilizers. This groundbreaking approach not only allows us to tap into sustainable resources but also introduces new organic options to diversify the market. https://deep-purple.eu/bio-fertilizer-insights/

🎯 The Nature Based Solutions for Soil Management (NBSOIL Project) project is a four-year initiative funded by the EU and led by the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation IUNG in Poland. It is dedicated to revolutionizing soil management practices. alchemia-nova's key role in the project is to showcase bioremediation as a nature-based solution (NBS) for combatting soil pollution and fostering the sustainable reuse of contaminated lands. https://www.alchemia-nova.net/projects/nbsoil/

Our fourth training day kicked off with an insightful session led by Sarah Tariq Gilani, focusing on circular business models. She explained how businesses can seamlessly incorporate circularity, making them resilient to market fluctuations and allowing them to create more value from the existing resources. The concept of the triple-layered business model was introduced, followed by a dedicated pitch training session.

Later in the day, participants had the chance to work on their action plans, taking a moment to collect their thoughts. The highlight of the day was our visit to the 22nd district, where we explored the innovative practices of local mushroom growers Hut & Stiel. 🍄 They cultivate mushrooms using leftover materials from city offices and cafes, and they're even venturing into experimenting with other waste streams. This visit perfectly aligned with the objectives of our Agro-circularity Pioneers Week.

A special shout-out to Manuel and Vicky for giving us an incredible tour and the opportunity to savor their remarkable mushroom products. 🙌

Heinz Gattringer at the kickoff meeting of Nature-Based Solutions for Soil Management (NBSOIL Project)at BOKU - Universität für Bodenkultur Wien . NBSOIL is a four-year EU-funded initiative led by the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation IUNG in Poland.
It aims to create and test a comprehensive learning pathway for both current and future soil advisors, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to champion a holistic and nature-based solutions approach to soil management. 🌿

As an innovative, research-driven SME, we're proud to be part of this incredible project.
Here is what we will be doing to support this initiative:
🌍 Conducting on-site demonstration trials in Austria and Italy on two abandoned sites (industrial and mining).
🌿 Implementing a series of measures, including soil amendments, across approximately 1 hectare of land.
🧪 Measuring various soil pollutants like heavy metals, PAHs, and microplastics.
🍄 Employing a diverse range of approaches and methods, including the use of bacteria, fungi, and plants to combat pollutants, even microplastics in soil.
🔬 Exploring the recovery of valuable metals after phytoextraction from the soil.
📈 Aiming for a measurable reduction in soil pollutants per ppm.

Our ultimate goal you ask?

It is to deliver a cutting-edge technology package for soil advisors trained by the project and potential clients (public and private) as part of our consultancy services.

Day 3 of our training program was incredibly enriching! 🌟 We kicked off the day with an insightful presentation by , who explained the Theory of Change, the distinction between outcomes and impacts, and the practical use of social impact navigators for project and startup planning. 🚀

, our Managing Director at ALCN, then delivered a comprehensive session on Access to Finance, a critical aspect that often limits the realization of great ideas. He delved into various funding channels, providing our participants with valuable insights. Many also gained clarity on EU funding and other funding-related questions they had. 💰💡

Femke Meeuwes and Sarah Tariq Gilani , both Project Managers and Communication Specialists at ALCN, co-hosted a design thinking workshop in the following session. It helped participants tailor their training programs to share their newfound knowledge effectively. The design-thinking approach encouraged them to create programs tailored to their target audience, adopting a human-centric approach. An Action Plan Guide was also shared at this stage. It will guide our participants in capturing and internalizing their learning and, ultimately, in disseminating this information effectively in their respective regions. 🧠✏️

The day concluded with a fascinating visit to , a composting facility managed by the City of Vienna. Here, all of the city's biowaste is transformed into compost, a truly awe-inspiring process. Witnessing waste being turned into fertile soil and fertilizer was a remarkable experience! 🌱🌍
