Alex… is my gold clean?

Someone asked me that across the counter, and it stopped me cold. Because it's the question that actually matters — not the price, not the shine. Where did it come from, and can you stand behind it?

I've pushed deals back over that answer. I'd rather lose the sale than sell you a story I can't verify.

For a first physical-gold purchase, the exciting option is not always the practical one. Standard, widely recognised units are often easier to compare, authenticate and resell than limited editions or high-making-charge pieces. Liquidity means ease of resale—not a guaranteed price—and dealers usually quote a bid that can be below spot. Before buying, compare the all-in purchase price with the seller’s published or stated buyback approach, and understand the premium you are paying for a smaller unit. The first purchase is a chance to learn how buying, checking, storing and selling actually work. What would you choose first? 👇 — Alex, The Gold Guy.

In defense of the kids buying gold.

Everyone loves to mock young people for their money habits. But some of them quietly skipped the hype, ignored the noise, and put a little into the oldest, most patient asset on earth.

That's not reckless. That's the opposite. They chose the thing that lasts.

No president or central bank simply declares the global benchmark gold price. The LBMA Gold Price is determined through a twice-daily electronic auction administered by ICE Benchmark Administration, at 10:30 and 15:00 London time on London business days. It is a wholesale Loco London benchmark, not a retail shop ticket. Your local quote can also include dealer margin, logistics, insurance, fabrication and tax. Knowing the benchmark does not eliminate every premium; it gives you a better starting point for asking what the quote includes. What would you ask next? 👇 — Alex, The Gold Guy.

The tax nobody ever votes on.

Nobody stands up and votes for inflation. But every year it quietly takes a cut of everything you saved — your cash buys a little less, and no one asks your permission.

That's the whole case for holding something real. Gold doesn't pay that tax the way paper does.

A certificate can support a gold purchase, but paper alone is not proof. Start with the trail: can the refiner, seller and stated product be independently checked through official channels? Do the stated weight, purity and dimensions align with the item you are buying? Is the seller giving you time to verify rather than creating urgency? Retail products are not automatically “Good Delivery” bars, so use the issuer’s own channels and reputable dealers—not a random link or QR code—to check what you are being shown. Save this before your next purchase. 👇 — Alex, The Gold Guy.

When the money died.

History keeps repeating the same lesson — paper promises fail, and the people who held something real walked out standing.

That's the whole story of gold. Not a get-rich scheme. A way to keep what you earned when the money around you stops meaning anything.

A dealer who only says “buy now” is not giving you the full argument. Gold has had a major run, and any asset can pull back after a sharp move. It also pays no income while you hold it, so opportunity cost matters. If someone has no emergency cash, is carrying expensive debt or would panic at a drawdown, a gold purchase may not be the first step. If you choose to buy, consider a paced approach using money you will not need soon rather than a nervous lump sum. Which part of that is hardest to hear? 👇 — Alex, The Gold Guy.

Why the Costco gold bar breaks my heart.

Buying gold there feels smart — easy, cheap-looking, right by the rotisserie chickens. But that convenience has a cost. You buy at a retail premium, and the day you sell, you get the wholesale buyback price — often well under what you paid.

Gold is a great thing to own. Just know the spread you're walking into before you buy.

Before you agree to a jewellery total, read the lines that create it: weight, purity, the rate used, and the making charge. Then check any VAT shown on the invoice. The daily rate can move; the making charge is a commercial fee, so it deserves a direct question. A clear receipt lets you rebuild the math and compare like with like. If a shop cannot explain the price line by line, do not rush the decision. Which line do you check first? 👇 — Alex, The Gold Guy.
