Inflation just threw markets a curveball πŸ“Š

July's headline PCE came in at 3.7% year-over-year β€” hotter than the 3.6% consensus β€” sending Treasury yields up 4-5bps across the curve and lifting the odds of a September Fed rate hike. The immediate FX reaction: EUR/USD slipped to 1.1650, while AUD found support on the stronger print.

The timing couldn't be more pointed β€” this print lands right as the Jackson Hole symposium kicks off, with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh set to speak Friday. Analysts don't expect major forward guidance, but after today's surprise, markets will be parsing every word.

EUR/USD is sitting at a key decision point today πŸ’Άβš‘

The pair is trading around 1.1670, but needs a sustained move above 1.1700 to regain real upside momentum. Behind the move: the US Dollar Index has slipped below 99 (turning bearish under 99.40), alongside a sharp drop in Treasury yields and softer crude oil prices.

Today's wildcard: US Core PCE inflation data β€” the Fed's favored inflation gauge β€” lands just two days before Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's highly anticipated Jackson Hole speech. Add this week's US Q2 GDP revision to the mix, and volatility is squarely on the table for EUR/USD.

Gold Holds Above $4,600 as USD Weakness Keeps XAU/USD in Focus

Gold (XAU/USD) extended its advance in early Asian trading on Monday, rising to around $4,625 β€” its highest level since May 15.
The move comes as the US Dollar remains under pressure following renewed attention on US Treasury buyback plans. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated the government could increase buybacks beyond the previously announced $4 billion, reinforcing expectations for continued support at the longer end of the Treasury market.
A weaker USD has provided a supportive backdrop for gold, while the evolving US rate outlook remains a key factor for the non-yielding precious metal.
Technically, XAU/USD remains above its 100-day SMA at $4,379, keeping the broader near-term structure constructive. The Bollinger upper band near $4,676 is now an important level to watch, while an RSI of 70.81 indicates momentum has moved into overbought territory.
Key levels to watch:
β€” Current price: ~$4,625
β€” Resistance: ~$4,676
β€” 100-day SMA: $4,379
β€” Bollinger middle band: $4,306
The next area of focus is the US rate and Treasury market outlook, with further shifts in yields and the US Dollar likely to remain important drivers for gold's next move.

FOMC MINUTES ARE OUT πŸ“Š
The July minutes reveal a Fed that was more hawkish than the 9–3 vote to hold rates at 3.50%–3.75% might suggest.
Beyond the three dissenters β€” Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan β€” who favored a 25bp hike, many participants said further policy tightening would likely be necessary if inflation failed to decline.
But the policy backdrop has already changed.
Since the July meeting, the latest data have shown weaker payrolls, cooler inflation and softer retail sales. That means the minutes capture a policy debate based on conditions as they stood on July 29 β€” before those newer signals arrived.
What comes next?
Attention now turns to Jackson Hole, where markets will be looking for fresh signals on the Fed's policy outlook.
