Indian Entrepreneurs will see a bright ray of hope from a city in the southern most part of the country, Kochi. Startup Village, a telecom incubator in Kochi formed last year as a public-private partnership, is planning to launch a centre in the US.

The motive behind this is to tap the huge well of resources available in the US, which is crucial for growth and experience. The centre will serve as a great launch pad for young entrepreneurs to nurture their ideas and gain the experience to design their business models. The key benefits from this centre will be the availability of resources like experts in the field, a view of competition in the US market, and hands on experience with big clients.

US is the hub of technology and it is a positive step forward taken by the incubator program to create a curriculum which enables budding youngsters to get a feel of the startup hotspot. Sanjay Vijayakumar, CEO of MobME and promoter of Startup Village said, “In India, there is a lack of product startup ecosystem and many startups entering the US are not aware of the ecosystem in the US, which is the technology hub. The new centre will provide opportunities for young entrepreneurs to understand the US market, interact with similar companies and tech leaders.”

RIM recently (the software developer for BlackBerry) unveiled its latest OS BlackBerry10. Few of us know that the applications for this OS were developed by 57 companies residing within Kochi’s Startup Village, an incubation centre supported by the Indian government. Innovators like these will benefit greatly from the new incubation centre which will be launched in the US.

WHAT IS DDI?
Direct Diaspora Investment (DDI)

When going for the definition of DDI, one might first consider the idea of transnational networks and the theoretical components that comprise them, components such as social capital, brain gain, return migration and remittances.

DDI is a part of a larger transnational superstructure contributing to the integration of societies into the global economy via an interconnectedness of donations, small and large investments, trade, tourism and unilateral transfers

Once capital flows arrive in the country, DDI is more likely to stay than other types of investment. Like FDI, DDI is more fixed and more difficult to pull out of the country than portfolio investment in the event of a political or financial crisis. DDI is superior to other forms of FDI because diasporas have a better grasp and understanding of the local business environment. They are better informed and equipped to manage uncertainties in their home country and, consequently, able to absorb political risk and economic shocks.
