The UAE has introduced significant updates to its Wage Protection System (WPS), with stricter salary payment deadlines and tighter payroll compliance measures set to take effect from 1st June 2026. Here's what you need to know:

* Starting June 1, 2026, salaries for the previous month must be paid by the first day of each new Gregorian month. For example, salaries for the month of May must be paid by the 1st of June.
* Any salary payments made after this date will be classified as delayed as per the WPS guidelines.
* This framework also allows for certain legally permitted salary deductions or withheld amounts under UAE labour law, while still maintaining compliance status.
* Employees will still be considered paid if they receive at least 85% of their entitled salary, provided any remaining amount relates to legally permitted deductions or withholdings. However, employees still retain the right to claim any unpaid dues.
* Companies that fail to pay wages on time may face penalties and enforcement measures under existing UAE laws, with oversight from regulatory and judicial authorities.
