Today we need to talk about something that honestly still blows my mind

Not one.
Not two.
Six.

Same badgeโ€ฆ same 300hp stickerโ€ฆ completely different personalities.

Itโ€™s like rocking up at a braai and finding out thereโ€™s six different types of brandewynโ€ฆ all 43%โ€ฆ but each one hits very differently

Letโ€™s just appreciate this quickly.

300hp on the back of a boat
That V8 sound
That push when you hit the throttle

Thereโ€™s not a single oke reading this that hears a V8 fire up and goes: โ€œJa nee, not for me.โ€

Don't lie...

Mercury didnโ€™t just build one 300hp and call it a day.

No.

They built ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜… ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ of the same motor.

Same 4.6L V8 platform
Completely different attitudes.

Itโ€™s like:
One is a gym oke
One is a businessman
One is a taxi driver
One is a lunatic

All wearing the same shirt.

This is your everyday legend.

Light, reliable, does everything.

The oke that rocks up, braais, helps clean, and goes home.

No drama.

Perfect for:
Offshore boats
Family setups
โ€ข General โ€œletโ€™s go fishingโ€ vibes

This is the one your dad would buy.

This oke doesnโ€™t care about top speed.

Heโ€™s there to work.

You can run this thing all day, every day, and itโ€™ll still ask:
โ€œIs that all?โ€

Heavy-duty gearcase.
Built for punishment.

Perfect for:
Commercial fishing
Water taxis
โ€ข The oke who doesnโ€™t switch his motor offโ€ฆ ever

This is the Hilux of outboards.

Now weโ€™re getting spicy.

This one is for the okes who:
Care about hole shot
Care about acceleration
Care about beating their buddy to the spot

Higher revs. More aggressive.

This is the oke with Oakleys and a sponsor sticker on his bakkie.

This one

This one doesnโ€™t shout.

It hums.

Smooth. Quiet. Fancy.

You start it and youโ€™re like:
โ€œWaitโ€ฆ is it even on?โ€

Advanced MidSection = no vibration.
Built-in steering = no nonsense.

Perfect for:
Big fancy boats
โ€ข People who say โ€œletโ€™s cruiseโ€ instead of โ€œletโ€™s send itโ€

This is the Mercedes S-Class on water.

Now weโ€™re talking.

This thing is not normal.

6400 RPM.
Sport Master gearcase.
Growl that makes people turn their heads.

This is for the okes who:
Check GPS speed every 5 minutes
โ€ข Donโ€™t believe in โ€œfast enoughโ€
Think 127km/h is just a warm-up

This motor doesnโ€™t ask questions.

It just goes.

This one

Most of you will never even see one in real life.

Short shaft.
Race spec.
Built for absolute chaos.

This is for boats doing 160km/h+ over waves.

Not for:
Your dam
Your Sunday jol
โ€ข Your cousinโ€™s pontoon

This is for people with helmets and no fear.

Salesman:
โ€œCoolโ€ฆ which one?โ€

Oke:
โ€œโ€ฆwhat do you mean which one??

โ€ข A bass tournament oke โ†’ Pro XS
โ€ข A luxury cruiser โ†’ Verado

I genuinely love this.

Be honest
Did you even know there were SIX different 300hp Mercs?

And more importantly

Which one are you taking?

12/03/2026

Alrightโ€ฆ I need to talk about something that popped into my head last night.

Yesterday I saw a video online...

You know the type.

Two okes arguing in the comments like they are personally employed by the brand.

One guy typing:
โ€œYamaha is the best motor ever built.โ€

Then the next oke arrives:
โ€œNo bru Suzuki is better.โ€

Then someone else comes in:
โ€œMercury destroys both.โ€

Next thing the comments look like a Hilux vs Ranger fight...

And it got me thinking

๐—œ๐˜โ€™๐˜€ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฒ.

Times have changed.

And hereโ€™s the honest truth that some people donโ€™t want to hear:
There is no such thing as a bad outboard anymore.

None.

Not Yamaha.
Not Suzuki.
Not Mercury.

These motors have evolved so much over the last 20 years itโ€™s actually insane.

Fuel injection
ECU management
Better cooling systems
Better metallurgy
Better electronics

Everything has improved.

All three of the big players make

Full stop.

Back in the day things were different.

Some motors were actually problem children.

You had motors that drank fuel like a sailor.
Others that refused to start.
Some that smoked like a chimney.

But today?

A modern outboard is basically

Theyโ€™re efficient.
Theyโ€™re reliable.
And theyโ€™re built to last.

So this constant โ€œ๐—บ๐˜† ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟโ€ argument?

Itโ€™s honestly a bit outdated.

Let me paint you a picture.

A guy walks into a boat dealership.

He didnโ€™t grow up with boats.
His dad didnโ€™t own a ski boat.

Heโ€™s just decided:
โ€œJa you know whatโ€ฆ I want a boat.โ€

So he chooses a nice boat.
Now he looks at the motor.

Maybe itโ€™s a Suzuki.

He thinks:
โ€œOh yes I know Suzukiโ€ฆ they make bikes.โ€

Or itโ€™s a Yamaha.
โ€œOh yes Yamahaโ€ฆ they make bikes and pianos and everything.โ€

Or itโ€™s a Mercury.
โ€œJa Iโ€™ve heard of that before.โ€

And thatโ€™s it.

He doesnโ€™t care about the history of two-strokes vs four-strokes.

He doesnโ€™t care about gear ratios.

He doesnโ€™t care about what brand won some bass tournament in 2008.

He just wants to go boating.

Hereโ€™s the big change nobody wants to admit.

That era is slowly disappearing.

There are basically

This guy grew up with a certain motor.

Maybe his grandfather had a Mercury on a Miami Classic in 1970.
He knows that motor.

He trusts that motor.

So naturally he buys the same brand.

Not because the others are bad

But because thatโ€™s what he knows.

Now these guys are a different story.

Bass fishing is a very technical world.

There are reasons they pick certain motors.

Performance.
Weight.
Torque.
Setups.

But thatโ€™s a ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ weโ€™ll talk about another day.

You know this oke.

He spent five minutes on Google.

Now suddenly heโ€™s an outboard engineer.

Heโ€™ll tell you exactly why one motor is better.

Meanwhile heโ€™s never even owned a boat.

Classic internet behavior.

In 2026 the biggest factors are simple.

And

Thatโ€™s it.

Letโ€™s say our new boater walks into the shop and sees three motors:

What do you think heโ€™s doing?

Heโ€™s pointing at the ๐—ฅ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฌ๐—ธ ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ.

Why?

Because to him:
300 horsepower is 300 horsepower.

He doesnโ€™t care if one is a V6 and the other is a V8.

He doesnโ€™t care about torque curves.

He sees the number on the sticker.

And he sees the price.

Decision made.

The market will always revolve around three brands:

And out of those threeโ€ฆ

๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐˜‡๐˜‚๐—ธ๐—ถ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฌ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ต๐—ฎ currently have the biggest market share...

Just like the ๐—›๐—ถ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜…

Both are fantastic.
Both sell like crazy.
Both have their loyal fans.

Now Mercury is still a fantastic motor.

But letโ€™s be honestโ€ฆ

Pricing has made things a bit harder for them in some markets.
Especially when you start talking about

The price gap can get pretty serious.

Although I must say
Iโ€™ve recently seen pricing on some ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฑ๐—ต๐—ฝ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฌ๐—ต๐—ฝ ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜†๐˜€ and itโ€™s actually very competitive.

Sometimes only ๐—ฅ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐—ธ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ compared to Yamaha or Suzuki.

But once you get into the

Then things get spicy.

Today most guys buy based on:

Price
What their buddy runs
What their neighbor runs
What the dealership recommends

Thatโ€™s the reality.

Not some giant brand loyalty war.

Yamaha is excellent.
Suzuki is excellent.
Mercury is excellent.

All three make incredibly reliable motors.

So arguing endlessly about which one is better

Is basically like arguing whether Klipdrift or Richelieu is better...

Youโ€™re still drinking brandewyn.

Now Iโ€™m curious.

What do you okes think?
Do you still have brand loyalty when it comes to outboards
Or do you just buy whatever gives you the best price and reliability?
