As we commemorate the World Soil Day today, 5th December, we must value the importance of soil in our lives. A healthy soil gives us a lot of benefits such as abundant food and is also a habitat for a lot of other living organisms which play a part in the ecosystems. A healthy soil is very important for crop growth, thereby ensuring food security.
We must always endeavour to prevent soil degradation or pollution and always ensure to consistently check its status by carrying out regular soil tests. We must pay attention to the needs of the soil at all times. Excessive use of chemicals in our agricultural activities must be avoided.
Like human beings regularly go to the hospital for health tests, let us also do the same to our soil; it also requires regular tests so that we ensure its good health. The importance of a healthy soil can not be overemphasised, especially this time of climate change. Technology has now made it very easy to carry out soil tests so there is no reason for not doing it regularly. Let's ensure the healthy of soil as we carry out our economic activities be it agriculture, mining, manufacturing, mechanics, trade or any other economic activities.
Happy World Soil Day!
