*RICHES OF GOD’S GOODNESS*
ROMANS 2:4
Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? (KJV)
Today is the last day of the year. You started the year with expectation or hopes. In last year's 31st night service, you made resolutions and offered prayers concerning various aspects of your life. Some of you received prophecies and special ministrations from your pastors. Months after months, weeks after weeks, days after days with various experiences, events, happenings and activities. Here you are with either dreams and hopes fulfilled, in progress or not fulfilled. Probably, you feel you disappointed God by your failures and unfaithfulness in various aspect of your Christian life. Some of you probably felt God over exceeded your expectations because of something good you did. Some of you probably are feeling God has been unfair to you because you served him well but did not get your dreams and hopes fulfilled. Some of you may be feeling you are being punished by God for something evil you did. This day mostly comes with different emotions and reflections.
Were things good for you because you were faithful to God? Did things get tough because you were not faithful to God? Is your present experience of life and state due to how faithful or unfaithful you have been with your Christian life? Should I be expecting more difficult times in life because of the sins I committed? Will God fail me because I failed him? I have been told, God is a just God therefore, I will reap what I have sown. Brethren, if you don’t know the character of God in the context of the scriptures, you will forever have battles in your mind concerning the interpretations of your life experiences. God is rich in goodness. God is always good to all his creation. In Matthew 5:44-45, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust”.
God does not bring evil, punishment or tough times to people because they failed him or are unfaithful to him. Even, people who are God’s enemies, he is good to them, how much more those who are his children. From our opening text, God uses goodness to woo men to repent. This means that any difficulty, tough times or misfortune is never God at work. He does not relate to us according to our works. He is good in all situation. As the year is ending, shake off every feeling of guilt, fear and insecurity and realize that God is our good Father. Things might have been tough but not because of your sins. If things were good for you, never think that it was because you were faithful. God’s goodness is independent of our goodness. His goodness is an expression of his character towards men irrespective of their state. He is forever rich in goodness. Our life experiences are determined by our choices and decisions but not God’s response to our sins or faithfulness to him.
CONFESSION: God is good all the time. He is never against me. He is for me always.
