As part of Money Smart Week South Africa 2026, the FAIS Ombud was proud to support a consumer awareness workshop hosted by the Council for Debt Collectors (CFDC) in collaboration with the Greater Giyani Municipality.

The event brought together a range of consumer protection stakeholders, including the National Credit Regulator (NCR), the Limpopo Consumer Affairs Office, and the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO), to promote financial literacy and raise awareness of consumer rights within the community.

Money Smart Week is about more than saving, spending and investing wisely.

It is also about knowing what questions to ask, understanding what you are signing up for, and knowing what to do when something goes wrong.

Money smart starts with knowing. Because financial confidence is not just about making the right choices, it is about understanding your rights when things do not go as expected.

As a consumer, you take out insurance because you trust your broker or financial adviser to help you understand the cover you are buying.

In a recent FAIS Ombud matter, a consumer's Toyota Hilux was stolen and the insurance claim was rejected because the tracking device did not meet the insurer's requirements.

The consumer did have a tracking device.

The issue was whether the consumer had been properly advised about the specific tracking requirement applicable to the vehicle.

The matter was ultimately settled for R820,000.

The lesson for consumers:

- When you rely on a financial adviser or broker, you should receive the information you need to make an informed decision.

Your financial future could depend on one conversation.

If a licensed financial adviser recommends an investment, retirement annuity, insurance policy or funeral policy, that recommendation is regarded as financial advice.

This means your adviser has legal responsibilities. They must:
- Understand your financial circumstances.
- Recommend products suitable for your needs.
- Explain the benefits and risks before you make a decision.

Understanding your rights can help you make informed financial decisions.
