African Water Commons Collective

African Water Commons Collective The city of Cape Town has installed a large number of "blue top" water meters and is planning to install many more. Enough is enough.

The AWCC is a collective of water campaigners mobilising against water privatisation and cut offs, and supporting self-organising for water access and water justice in and beyond South Africa. The city is specifically targeting the pensioners and get them to agree on a one-to one basis sweet talking them, the city says it will cost nothing and we will even have our water leaks fixed for nothing. T

hey want us to belive we are very lucky to have these meters installed. What they are not telling us is this:

- 360 liters is way too little and the impact it has on our daily lives; it prevents us from having gardens, we use our bath water to flush the toilet and sometimes we don´t flush.

-This device is causing more division within families. Parents are being called the "water secuirities" by their children, because we have to restrict them all the time.

-It has impact on residents with chronic illness as they rely on water to drink their medication.

-The city says its´meters gives more free water than the goverments limit. What the City does not say is that very little extra is still too little. The city also does not say that this extra water is not free. The only 2 purpose the city have is:
To restrict water to the poor and to act as most effective debt collectors by denying the poor the financial credit given to the rich. Water is a human right and we demand decent housing for ALL!

Dar es Salaam has been grappling with persistent water scarcity, for quite sometime now. This has led to significant hardship for residents, forcing them to rely on private water vendors who have been inflating the price every day.*

*UWAWAMA TV spoke to the people from various neighborhoods in the city who complained of the challenges of water shortages and most of them reported that the price for a bucket of water now ranges between TSh 300 and TSh 1,500. Furthermore, in certain areas, even saline water is being sold at rates as high as TSh 700 per bucket.*

*On another note, citizens have strongly opposed to the proposed privatization of water services. They argued that such a move would lead to a twofold increase in costs, potentially resulting in a total loss of access to this essential service for low-income households.*
