Married couples with a joint bond on their home, need to know these three things:
1. If your spouse suddenly passes away, your home’s bond will have to be reregistered (ideally in your name). You need to plan for transferring and reregistration fees.
2. If your spouse is currently paying the actual monthly bond payment, you may not be able to afford / qualify for the “new bond” on your own name.
3. Simply having life cover for the same amount as your outstanding bond value, is not necessarily enough cover. There are other fees and taxes to consider too.
Sense-checking these three points in your estate plan, can be the difference between loosing or keeping your family home, just after you have lost your best friend.
