Nation Builder’s 6th annual IN GOOD COMPANY conference (IGC20) takes place on the mornings of 17 and 18 September, as a virtual event.

Speakers include Daniel Silke (probably SA’s top political-economy analyst), GG Alcock (author of “Kasinomics”), Shawn Theunissen (Growthpoint enterprise development maven), and Dr Boshoff Steenekamp (MMI healthcare finance strategist and a leading epidemiologist), among others.

There is immediate and understandable concern about the financial position of NPOs in the Covid-19 crisis and beyond, and some social investors have stepped forward to set up support mechanisms for them.

Less spoken about is the financial crunch that must surely befall social investors themselves in the coming years. Some of this is from an inevitable CSI funding fall-off due to smaller company profits. Another must come from decreased National Lottery Commission earnings because of restrictions on the retail sale of Lotto tickets.

I explore this in my blog at http://whammedia.co.za/social-investments-coming-depression/

Please let me know what you think, in the comments section - this always leads to an interesting dialogue.

Social investment spend is likely to crash over the next years because of SA’s economic contraction. Private sector funders of developmental work will need to work out how best to mitigate the effe…

Playing on the guilt impulse to get support for causes and campaigns sometimes works. Why it can backfire is less well understood.

The reasons for people and their companies giving to good causes include a sense of altruism, religious or ideological belief, legal compliance and tradition. But a large reason behind the giving i…

Super pleased with my team at WHAM! Media, Autonomous Republic, and RM Photography for their work on the 2018 annual report of the Tiger Brands Foundation, released today.

The Foundation is an independent B-BBEE trust that carries daily nutrition programmes, with in-school breakfasts and related education, to 92 of SA’s poorest schools. Trained community food handlers served TBF’s 60-millionth meal this year. The staff of the Foundation work across all provinces.

They’re top class in social investment, and it’s an honour to be alongside them in their long-term strategic positioning.

NEW MINING CHARTER AND CSI – INITIAL THOUGHTS

The new Mining Charter, proposed by the Department of Mineral Resources this afternoon, is draconian in its empowerment ownership and management components compared to what is expected of any other parts of the private sector, and compared to the standing 2010 Mining Charter.

But it is mostly an improvement on what the Zuma government had sought.

The main positive thing is in accepting the once-empowered-always-empowered standard, although the new Charter raises expectations for this to be achieved by 2030 (see link below).

For people who are serious in their social investment work, there is much that must be done to realise truly community-based and broad-based ownership of companies (8%). But do fool yourself.

Getting it right will mean beating off lots of pork-barrel politics from within-and-without the business, and know that the community “ownership“ claim can only work if it doesn’t harm the business and is accomplished in ways that enhance it, and thus brings proper empowerment for all concerned.

SA’s mines are not in a place where poorly through-through social experiments can be afforded. Time for tough thinking and doing.
