The insurance industry in South Africa continues to evolve rapidly as digital transformation reshapes how providers operate, serve customers, and manage risk.

According to a recent industry analysis by Jaco Louw, Insurance & Risk Consulting Leader at EY Africa, the insurance industry is facing increasing pressure from multiple directions. Rising claims costs, regulatory changes, and evolving customer expectations are driving a faster move toward simpler, more digitally enabled insurance models.

For companies like us, this reinforces the importance of building integrated, scalable systems that improve efficiency while supporting better decision-making across the value chain.

Insurance technology is undergoing a fundamental shift.

We’re moving beyond systems that simply store data, toward platforms that interpret, automate, and enable decision-making in real time.

This evolution is being driven by:

- Smarter automation
- Real-time data integration
- Improved customer experience expectations
- The need for operational efficiency at scale

At Cardinal, this shift aligns closely with how we approach building modern insurance infrastructure, focused on connection, clarity, and capability.

One thing that stands out is his willingness to continuously grow and support the wider business, including recently achieving his AWS certification to further strengthen his cloud and infrastructure skills.

He is always willing to assist across multiple areas, whether it’s after-hours support, troubleshooting critical issues, supporting customer environments, assisting with migrations, or mentoring and sharing knowledge with customer IT teams. His reliability, positive attitude, and commitment to getting things done have made a meaningful impact within Cardinal IT and across the customers he supports.

His work reflects what we value most: reliability, ownership, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

AI is transforming how insurance operates, bringing speed, consistency, and efficiency to everyday processes.

But the real value emerges in how automation and human expertise work together.

In practice, it looks like this:
• AI identifies and processes straightforward cases quickly
• Exceptions and high-impact scenarios are flagged early
• Human specialists step in where context, judgment, and empathy are required

This balance ensures that operations remain efficient, without losing the human understanding that customers rely on, especially in complex or sensitive moments.

At Cardinal, this hybrid approach is central to how we think about modern insurance systems: not replacing people, but enabling them to focus where they add the most value.

Insurance is entering a defining phase where AI is no longer an enhancement layer, it is becoming the foundation of how the industry operates.

Insurers are increasingly shifting toward real-time decisioning, automated workflows, and connected systems that span underwriting, claims, and policy administration. This evolution is changing not just how processes run, but how insurers structure their operating models.

This article explores how AI is expected to become the “operating system” of insurance, powering efficiency, improving responsiveness, and enabling more intelligent decision-making across the value chain.

At Cardinal, we see this shift reflected in the growing demand for connected, rule-driven platforms that reduce complexity, improve visibility, and support end-to-end digital transformation across insurance operations.
