How will your insurance policy respond to severe weather?

This year we’ve had summer in winter, snow in spring, tornados and enough rain to have us all thinking maybe we should take out our flippers and row boats.

With such unpredictable weather, it is no longer a matter of if an event will happen, but when – and how devastating it may be.

With this in mind, its crucial for everyone to review your insurance policy to ensure your assets are protected from weather-related losses.

Here are some helpful tips to keep you covered:
1. Review your policy: Check the sections of your policy that deal with weather-related damage, as well as the excess you are liable for. Ensure you are covered for floods, windstorms, hail and tornadoes, as these can vary depending on your Insurer and location.
2. Add extra cover if needed: If your policy doesn’t cover specific severe weather events, check if there are other products out there who may offer you that cover.
3. Check for exclusions: Some policies don’t cover certain types of extreme weather. Be aware of exclusions so you can take extra precautions if needed.

Lastly - Insurers do not cover maintenance related losses - so clear the gutters, cut back trees which are close your buildings, and ensure the roof tiles are in place, as bad winds and monkeys often displace roof tiles resulting in leaks etc.

The holiday spirit has arrived! 🏖 Before you unwind, make sure your insurance is holiday ready:

✔ Review your policy cover for on your home, motor vehicles and valuables. Taking note of any added-value benefits such as roadside assistance.
✔ Add laptops, cameras, or sports gear to your 'All Risks' cover—household contents aren’t covered outside your home.
✔ Confirm travel insurance details — especially for any international trips.
✔ Prep for emergencies by keeping key contact numbers handy.
✔ Secure your home while you’re away by arming your alarm, arranging a house sitter or prepping for power outages. If going away for more than a week - turn off the geyser and your water mains.
