As South Africa commemorates 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising, we honour the courage, resilience and determination of a generation that helped shape our nation’s future.

This year’s Youth Month theme, “RESET@50: The Future Calls”, reminds us that South Africa’s future depends on the energy, innovation, and leadership of today’s youth.

At Land Bank, we recognise the vital role that young farmers, agripreneurs and agricultural innovators play in strengthening food security, creating jobs, and driving sustainable economic growth. Through our development-focused financial solutions, we remain committed to empowering the next generation of agricultural leaders as they build a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous future.

Because the future of farming is not tomorrow’s responsibility, it is being shaped by today’s youth.

The Future Has a Young Face | Lusani Alicia Mamuliki

“If I could share one message about the role of young people in farming, it would be this: young people play an important role in producing food for the country and bringing new ideas that can improve the way farming is done.

Young people have the ability to see opportunities differently. They are often more willing to embrace innovation, adopt new technologies, and explore better ways of doing things. This fresh thinking is important for the growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector, helping farms become more productive, efficient, and resilient.

Young farmers are also more energetic. Farming requires dedication, hard work, and perseverance, and young people bring the energy and determination needed to meet the challenges of producing food. Their passion and willingness to learn create opportunities not only for themselves but also for the communities they serve.

Having more young farmers ensures that the future of South Africa is in safe hands. As young farmers continue to enter the sector, they strengthen food security, create jobs, and contribute to economic growth. Most importantly, they ensure that agriculture remains sustainable for future generations.

Young farmers are the future of tomorrow, and investing in them today is an investment in a stronger, more food-secure South Africa."

Letters to My Younger Self | Motlalepule Vincent Masiu

"If I could speak to my younger self before starting my farming journey, I would tell him to find two mentors: one for farming and one for life.

A farming mentor helps shorten the learning curve by sharing practical experience, helping you avoid costly mistakes, and guiding the growth of your business. A life mentor teaches balance, resilience, leadership, discipline, and the importance of making decisions that align with your long-term goals.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that farming is not just about producing crops or livestock – it's about managing a business. Cash flow is more important than net worth because assets alone do not keep operations running. Consistent income and disciplined financial management do.

Success in farming means little if your health, relationships, and values are neglected. Having both mentors allows you to grow not only as a farmer but also as a person, creating a balance between building a successful agricultural business and living a meaningful life.

Build the farm but also build the person running it."

– Motlalepule Vincent Masiu, Land Bank-funded farmer
