2024 IAFCI International Award Recipients

Congratulations to all the award winners for their unwavering commitment and phenomenal work fighting crime. Your collective efforts have significantly impacted our shared mission.

It is also with great honour that I announce that Craig Pederson of TCG Digital Forensics, our previous Vice President of IAFCI, Western Cape Chapter and dedicated member, received the NCFTA Cyber Investigations International Contributor of the Year Award. This award will be presented to him later in August this year at our International Conference in Las Vagas, US.

Craig was nominated and selected as the 2024 NCFTA’s Cyber Investigations Contributor of the Year for his exemplary investigation of the Mirror Trading International (MTI) Ponzi scheme in South Africa. The scheme involved MTI’s CEO, Johan Steynberg and others facilitating an illegal Bitcoin Ponzi scheme that involved over 1200 Bitcoin transactions with an input value of more than 3700 BTC and over 300,000 user accounts. Steynberg was charged as the primary and died in 2024. More than ZAR 12 billion was recovered during the course of early investigation, with further recoveries enabled through transaction analysis and cryptocurrency tracing. Additionally, MTI was ordered to pay more than $1.7 billion in restitution to defrauded victims.

A real story about a scam on a fake website!

Richard was deceived by a false provider of driving lessons. A well-designed fake website turned out to be an online scam that cost Richard when he tried to prepare for his driving test.

Before encountering the fake website, Richard wasn’t at all concerned about the possibility of being scammed on the internet – he thought he was pretty IT savvy. However, Richard was deceived when he signed up for a number of lessons with a driving lessons company. When he did a Google search, he automatically clicked on the first link that came up on his screen, thinking it was legitimate and the official website for booking driving lessons.

Richard only realized something wasn’t right when he never received email confirmation that his payment had gone through. When he checked his account online, he noticed that $85 had been debited from his account, not $40 – which was the actual offer he originally saw. Suspecting there might be something wrong, Richard went back to check out the website and noticed a number of things that seemed odd:
there was no security icon (the ‘s’ in https)
the domain name didn’t look right
there were no contact details included on the website

Once he overcame the initial shock, Richard decided to cancel the card he had used for the transaction and contacted his bank. However, there was nothing he could do in terms of getting a refund as he knew he had handed over the payment himself by popping in his personal card details.

How to avoid this type of scam
💻 Always ensure the website is secure e.g. https is the universal understanding of a secure website – the S means secure. However, the ‘s’ can sometimes be manipulated by fraudsters so it is important to be vigilant and follow the additional tips below.
💻 Always log on to a website directly rather than clicking on links provided in an email.
💻 If it looks too good – it probably is. Call the supplier to double check it really is an offer that exists!
💻 Always make sure that the website contains contact details for the supplier – either phone, address or an email.

Experts believe at least 80% of sponsored advertisements about pets may be fake.

To avoid becoming a victim of a pet adoption scam, there are several steps you should take:
1️⃣ Skip the pure breed puppy requirement and adopt from a local shelter.
2️⃣ Always meet your future pet in person before paying.
3️⃣ Beware of any seller who says she’s located out-of-town (or worse, overseas).
4️⃣ Never wire money for any purchase.
5️⃣ Do your research.
6️⃣ Check references.
7️⃣ Don’t trust “free pet” offers.
8️⃣ Make sure their pet shipper is legitimate.
