Here's something worth knowing before you assume your Buildings section covers everything on your property: it usually doesn't.

A "building" under most policies means permanent, fixed structures like your main house, a garage, that kind of thing. Wendy houses, greenhouses, and similar non-permanent structures often fall outside that definition entirely, unless they've been specifically added.

There's also a distinction that catches people out: storm or accidental damage is covered, but damage that's really the result of years of deferred maintenance usually isn't, even when a storm is the thing that finally exposes it. Insurers look at the underlying cause, not just what triggered the claim.

Worth a two-minute check: do you know what your Buildings section actually covers, and what's excluded? If you're not sure, WhatsApp us and we'll go through it with you.

The Highveld storm season typically kicks in from September, which means August is exactly the right time to do a proper walk-around of your property before the rain arrives.

We put together a quick 5-point checklist of the things that most often cause water damage in SA homes, because the honest truth is that a lot of water-related claims come down to maintenance issues that could have been caught earlier. And most policies won't cover gradual damage or leaks that developed over time - only sudden, unforeseen events.

Here's what to check this month:

πŸ”Ή Your roof: cracked or missing tiles, rusted sheet metal, blocked gutters
πŸ”Ή External walls & parapets: hairline cracks, peeling paint, damp patches
πŸ”Ή Doors, windows & seals: worn rubber seals and ageing silicone around frames
πŸ”Ή Drainage & stormwater: clear drains and downpipes before they block
πŸ”Ή Your cover: waterproofing reduces damage, but it doesn't replace a proper policy

We put together a quick checklist because we keep seeing the same gaps come up when we review people's cover: Buildings vs Contents, the All Risk add-on for things you take out the house, geyser and burst-pipe cover, and underinsurance (which can reduce a payout on any claim, not just the big ones).
Swipe through, and if anything here doesn't match your policy, WhatsApp us and we'll check it for you, no obligation.

Winter's the season we get the most calls about claims that didn't go the way people expected and it usually comes down to one of three things. Geyser age exclusions (some insurers reduce cover once your geyser's past a certain age), gradual damage and wear and tear (a slow leak is treated very differently to a sudden burst), and the unoccupied-home clause (away for 30+ days? some policies need you to notify them first).

Which one surprised you? WhatsApp us and we'll check your policy for free πŸ‘‰068 605 6382.

Quick one: when did you last actually check that you have an emergency assist number saved in your phone? Not "I'll google it if I need it" - actually saved, ready to go.
If you're ever in an accident or break down, the biggest mistake is letting a random tow truck take your car before you've called to get it authorised - it can mean your vehicle ends up at the wrong repairer, higher towing fees, and extra storage or release charges you didn't need to pay.
Save Emergency Assist (0860 747 247) and our number (068 605 6382) into your phone now.
If you're not sure which number applies to your specific policy, WhatsApp us and we'll confirm it for you.

πŸ’§ Burst geysers are one of the most common home insurance claims in South Africa, especially in winter.

The average replacement costs between R10 000 and R15 000.
Here's the part most people don't realise: that's roughly 2 to 3 years' worth of premiums.

That means your Homeowners Insurance isn't just a monthly expense, it's essentially a savings plan for your geyser, with a whole lot of added benefits on top. 😊
Is your geyser covered? Let's make sure.

🏠 Do you know the difference between Buildings and Contents Insurance?
Buildings Insurance covers the physical structure of your home (the walls, roof, floors and fixtures). So if a fire damages your walls or a storm destroys your roof, you're covered.
Contents Insurance covers everything inside (your furniture, appliances, electronics and valuables). If it falls out when you turn your house upside down, it is contents. πŸ˜„

(You would need additional All Risk cover for while it is out the house with you though eg. Cell phone, laptop, sunglasses etc. as it is only covered while in the house under Contents and not when you leave the house.)

Most people have one but not the other, and only find out when it's too late.
Not sure what you have? Drop us a message and we'll check your cover with you. πŸ‘‡
