Q&A with SAICA trainee's
What keeps audit work interesting for you?
No two clients are the same. We work with very different industries. So, there's different people, different challenges. So there's always something new to learn and a way to grow.
What is the one thing you wish audit clients know about the audit process?
So firstly, the order process doesn't happen overnight. It is a time consuming process. At the same time, it's also very time sensitive and keeping that in mind, we also wouldn't ask questions that we shouldn't be asking.
What makes a good auditor?
Uh I think it's uh curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to ask questions. You can't spend hours trying to figure out the answer by yourself. Sometimes you do need the help, and you need to be willing and humble enough to go ask uh your peers or your manager or anyone that might help you uh what you need to do in this situation.
Why is trust important in the audit profession?
Okay. So personally I believe relationships are built on trust and without relationships you wouldn't have clients and also within the office environment you need to build relationship with your fellow trainees with managers especially when you need help and why would you ask someone that you don't trust.
What advice would you give someone considering a career in audit?
Um once again don't be afraid to ask questions. uh auditing has a very steep learning curve. So you be really uh need to be really comfortable cooperating with people uh and Excel would not hurt to to get really familiar with it because you're going to use it every day.
What is a typical day in your role look like?
Okay. So I don't think as a audit trainee we have a difficult day every single day. Um, but to like sum it up, I'd say mostly get up early in the morning around 600 6:15. Um, get to the office around 7 7:30. Do your admin things like fill in your time sheets and then me personally, I am would say that I do my the harder part of the day in the mornings. Like for instance, we're doing reviews now. I do my analytics and I do like my VAT recons and tax. I do the easier stuff for the afternoons.
