The latest stats are in! Inflation eased to 3.5% in January, making your fuel and certain breakfast staples a bit more affordable.

The Wins:
Fuel: Petrol and diesel prices are down—Inland 95 is the cheapest it's been since Feb 2022! 🚗

The Pantry: Rice, maize meal, and eggs are all seeing price drops. A tray of six eggs is now roughly R22.90. 🍳

The Challenges:
The Braai: Meat prices are skyrocketing. Beef steak, stewing beef, and mince are up by as much as 30%. Even offal and pork have seen sharp increases. 🍖

School Gear: While stationery prices dropped this month, uniforms are costing more than last year. 🏫

The South African Reserve Bank just announced a rate cut to 6.75% (down from 7%). Bringing some much-needed relief to the Prime lending rate!

Against this backdrop, the MPC decided to reduce the policy rate by 25 basis points, to 6.75%, with effect from 21 November.

As expected the rate decision was hold

The MPC decided to reduce the policy rate by 25 basis points, to 7%, with effect from the 1st of August. The decision was unanimous.

A positive inflation surprise at 3,3%. While this takes a rate hike off the table for tomorrow's SARB decision, a rate hold is the most likely outcome, as central banks tend to wait for a longer trend to emerge before considering a cut. Still, good news for consumers.

|| Annual consumer price inflation eased to 3,3% in August from 3,5% in July. Softer food and fuel inflation took some of the heat off the headline rate.
