🚨 SARS IS OWED APPROXIMATELY R532 BILLION

This is not merely a headline.

If a taxpayer ignores a SARS Letter of Final Demand, SARS may instruct a bank, employer or customer to pay money directly to it. SARS may also obtain a civil judgment, attach assets and pursue further legal recovery.

Company directors and those managing a company’s finances may also face personal-liability risks in certain circumstances.

But being unable to pay is not the same as refusing to pay.

Depending on the facts, the appropriate solution may be:

• Disputing an incorrect assessment
• Requesting suspension of payment
• Applying for a payment arrangement
• Requesting remission of qualifying penalties
• Seeking a compromise of tax debt

🎙 Topic: SARS VAT Warning for Private Schools

SARS has called on affected private schools registered for VAT to apply for VAT deregistration following changes to the VAT treatment of schools.

Key Highlights:

* Private schools under the South African Schools Act may no longer charge VAT or claim input VAT from 1 January 2026
* Deregistration is not automatic — affected schools must apply using the VAT123e form
* Schools may become liable for “exit VAT” on certain assets where input VAT was previously claimed
* The first exit VAT payments are only expected to start from 1 January 2027
* SARS has allowed the amount to be paid in 12 equal monthly instalments
* The changes may place financial pressure on some schools and could eventually impact parents through higher fees

💡 Important reminder: Schools should start reviewing their VAT position now and seek professional tax guidance where necessary.
