The SARB’s next interest rate decision is due on 23 September, and the outlook has become more finely balanced following the US Federal Reserve’s surprise 25-basis-point rate hike. The Fed’s target range is now 3.75%–4.00%.

What’s shaping the decision?

✏️Inflation is easing
Headline inflation slowed to 4.3% in July, down from 5.0% in June. Lower inflation gives the SARB more room to consider easing rates.
✏️Growth is under pressure
South Africa’s economy contracted by 0.2% in Q2 2026, following 0.4% growth in Q1. Slower economic activity strengthens the domestic case for lower borrowing costs.
✏️Global risks have increased
Higher US interest rates can put pressure on emerging-market currencies and imported inflation. The Fed’s latest move therefore adds another consideration for the SARB.
✏️Oil and the rand remain important
Currency movements and volatile global oil prices could influence the inflation outlook and will remain important factors in the MPC’s decision.

What does this mean for homeowners?
The repo rate is currently 7.00%, with prime at 10.50%. The September decision could therefore mean rates remain where they are or move lower.

Hold, increase or cut?
Easing inflation and weaker economic growth could support a rate cut, while global uncertainty and inflation risks may give the SARB reason to hold or raise rates.
