“The next election will be about a lot of things, but now at least in part it’ll be a referendum on super,” proclaimed Treasurer Jim Chalmers to the AFR on Sunday after One Nation leader Pauline Hanson suggested people should be able to access their super to pay off their mortgages.

The Treasurer’s rebuke followed key members of the Coalition earlier in the week calling for the abolition of compulsory super entirely, setting up a political stoush that looks set to simmer away until the election in 2028.

It’s disappointing that despite its obvious success, Australia’s super system remains politically contested.

Today, in a National Press Club address, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Daniel Mulino announced a package of superannuation reforms following the collapses of Shield and First Guardian in 2024-2025.

The reforms include stronger member protections, introduction of safeguards for SMSFs, action on harmful lead generation practices, progress on financial advice reform, and changes to the CSLR.

This package is one of the most important consumer safety reforms in a decade, closing safety gaps and raising standards and accountability on those who manage Australians’ super. 👏

For the vast majority of workers, their guaranteed 12% super is now paid at the same time as wages for the first time since super was introduced.

But shockingly, in 2026 there are still pockets of the Australian workforce missing out on the same legal guarantee to super that is enjoyed by 17 million other working Australians. That’s not fair.

We need to make super truly universal. For carers. For all under-18s. For domestic workers. That is fair.

This week, we released new modelling to put a sharper focus on the scale of this problem and, significantly, that the size of the issue is growing.

Our latest analysis shows that about 530,000 teenage workers will miss out on $411 million in super this financial year because of the under-18 exclusion.

That’s 25,000 more young workers than just two years ago, while the amount of super they are denied has grown by 7% over the same period.

Sometimes the biggest reforms are about finishing what we started.

A few weeks back the Greens in the Senate tried to change the law so all under-18 workers would be paid super. Though ultimately unsuccessful, it amplified the importance of this issue and helped put it in the national spotlight.

It is clear additional consumer safeguards are needed to protect Australians’ super savings. Stories like these are exactly why we're calling for stronger protections to prevent consumer harm in high-risk super switching.
