At the first Passover, God told his people to prepare a meal. To take the blood of the lamb and put it over their door, so the Angel of Death would pass over. The night Jesus would be handed over to be crucified, he and his disciples were gathered for a meal. A Passover meal. There, Jesus told them he was the ultimate lamb of sacrifice whose blood was about to be shed. And so he instituted a new meal. A meal we now call the Lord’s Supper or Communion (Christians actually used to do this by gathering for a full meal). The Passover meal pointed back to what God had done for his people and ahead to Jesus, and the Lord’s Supper points us not only back to Jesus but ahead to the ultimate feast. All through the Bible we see examples of gathering to eat in celebration, so much so that it’s the imagery God uses to describe what will happen when we go home to Heaven. The Thanksgiving holiday isn’t something God told us to do, but what a great way to take time to consider his blessings and celebrate with a meal. Take time today to remember Jesus. It’s because of him that you have a seat at the table of him who reigns on the throne of God forever, and nothing can take that away from you.
Happy Thanksgiving!
