Most employers know what they spend on healthcare. Fewer can explain what is driving that spend.

A health plan is not one expense. It is a combination of claims, pharmacy, administration, risk protection, and the resources used to support members throughout the year.

Understanding those components creates a more useful conversation.
Instead of only asking, “What are we paying?”, employers can start asking:

What is driving the spend?
Where is it concentrated?
What can we influence?
Where do we need better visibility?

Because transparency is not simply seeing a number.
It is understanding what sits behind it.

At renewal season, a different funding model alone may not create lasting savings.

Many employers move to self-funded or level-funded plans, change networks, and see improvement—only to face another 20%+ renewal increase a year or two later.

Meaningful cost control requires more than changing how healthcare is financed. It requires changing how care is accessed and purchased.

When employees have clinician-led guidance to make informed healthcare decisions, they can find high-quality, cost-effective care at the right time. That supports better outcomes for members and more sustainable healthcare for employers.

At Elan, our Member Services team is made up of doctors and clinicians who help members navigate their options and make confident care decisions.

Price is easy to compare. Value takes more discipline to evaluate.

Employers can compare premiums in a spreadsheet. What is harder to measure is whether a plan is helping people access care, use benefits effectively, and make decisions that support better outcomes over time.

That is where the conversation has to move beyond price alone.

A stronger benefits strategy looks at how the plan performs in practice, not just what it costs on paper.
Because the lowest-priced option can still be the wrong decision if it creates friction, delays care, or drives spend in less effective ways.

The better question is not simply, “What does this plan cost?”
It is, “What value is this plan actually creating?”

Level funding is often misunderstood, and those misconceptions can keep employers from taking a closer look.

It’s not just for large companies, and it doesn’t mean taking on unlimited risk. It’s a different way to fund health benefits that can give employers more visibility into where their healthcare dollars are going and more control over how their plan performs.

The better you understand your options, the better positioned you are to make decisions that support both your business and your employees.

Better benefits strategies start with better conversations.

Elan Insurance Group is proud to sponsor the NextGen Benefits Mastermind Fall Summit, September 29–October 1 at Tanque Verde Ranch.

We’re looking forward to connecting with advisors, employers, and industry partners about the challenges shaping group health benefits: rising costs, pharmacy spend, access to care, and the need for clearer insight into plan performance.

If you’ll be at the summit, we’d welcome the chance to meet and exchange ideas on how to create more value in your benefits strategy.

If you start analyzing your health plan 90 days before renewal, what happened during the other 275 days?
By the time renewal arrives, most of the year's healthcare activity has already occurred.

Claims have developed. Pharmacy dollars have been spent. Employees have accessed—or struggled to access—care.

The opportunity is to understand what’s driving your plan throughout the year, while there’s still time to do something about it.

That means looking beyond the renewal number to understand:
• What’s driving claims and pharmacy spend
• Where and how employees are accessing care
• Which resources are actually being used
• Where opportunities exist to improve outcomes and control costs

Renewal should be a checkpoint in your benefits strategy—not the starting line.

Level funding is often misunderstood. And those misconceptions can keep employers from considering an option that may give them greater visibility and control over their healthcare spend.

Is it only for large employers?
Does it mean taking on unlimited risk?
Is it basically the same as fully insured?
Not quite.

Swipe through as we separate three common level-funding myths from the facts—and look at why understanding how your plan performs can be just as important as what it costs.

Because better information creates an opportunity to make better decisions.

The real value of level funding isn’t just what you can save. It’s what you can learn—and what you can do with that insight.

It’s about delivering high-quality healthcare by helping employees find the right care, at the right time, in the right place, at the right price—while giving employers greater insight into the factors they can influence and control.

Greater visibility into plan performance helps employers understand what’s driving healthcare costs, where opportunities exist, and where employees may need additional support.
And insight creates the opportunity to act.

When employers better understand what’s happening within their plan, they can make more informed decisions and connect the right resources to the right challenges—from managing pharmacy costs and high-cost medications to improving care navigation, expanding access to virtual care, and guiding employees toward higher-quality, cost-effective providers.

That’s when level funding becomes more than a financing strategy. It becomes a way to identify opportunities, deploy targeted solutions, and continuously improve how healthcare dollars are spent.
Because level funding can deliver more than potential savings.
Better insight. Better decisions. Better care. Greater control.
