A message from a stranger can seem harmless. Sometimes that is exactly how a much larger financial scam begins.
Relationship investment scams — sometimes called “pig butchering” scams — often start with an unexpected text, social message or online connection. The fraudster builds trust over time before introducing what appears to be an investment opportunity.
A few reminders worth sharing with family members:
- Be cautious with unsolicited investment opportunities.
- Verify who you are communicating with independently.
- Never rely on screenshots, testimonials or an app balance as proof that an investment is legitimate.
- Be especially cautious when someone you met online wants you to move money, wire funds or purchase cryptocurrency.
Awareness is one of the best places to start.
