Sometimes getting out of the office is just part of the job. 😉⛳

We had a great time at the CLA Golf Tournament last week! A beautiful day, good company, plenty of laughs and, thankfully, no requirement that any of us actually be good at golf. 😂

Events like this are always a good reminder that some of the best parts of this business happen outside of emails, meetings and insurance conversations. It's getting out, spending time with people and building relationships beyond the policy.

Some storms you see coming. Others… not so much. ⛈️

That’s true in life, and it’s definitely true in business.

A hailstorm rolls through. Equipment breaks down. A vehicle gets into an accident. Someone gets hurt. Something happens that absolutely was not on today’s to-do list.

Insurance can’t stop the storm.

But good coverage — and a good plan before something happens — can make a pretty big difference in what comes next.

That’s why I’d rather understand how your business actually works before there’s a claim. What keeps you moving, where the exposures are, and what would hurt the most if something went wrong.

Because when the storm does come, the goal is to spend a little less time worrying about the insurance…and a lot more time getting back to business.

And sometimes, life gives you a pretty good reminder that the storm eventually passes. 🌈

I’m pretty sure “commercial insurance advisor” sounded much simpler when I first signed up for this. 😂

What people think I do:

📄 Write insurance policies.
💰 Send renewal quotes.
☎️ Answer insurance questions.

What the job actually looks like:

🚙 Drive a ridiculous number of miles.

🏢 Tour businesses and learn how everything actually works.

🔎 Track down information an underwriter suddenly REALLY needs.

📞 Make a few dozen phone calls trying to solve something that sounded simple when we started.

🤝 Work with clients, underwriters, account managers and adjusters to get everyone moving in the same direction.

🌪️ Help someone figure out what to do when something goes very wrong.

☕ Consume an arguably unnecessary amount of caffeine.

And somewhere in there...

📄 Yes. We do insurance. 😂

But that's also what makes the job interesting.

Every business is different, every problem is different, and there's usually something new to figure out.

"Every business has blind spots."

This isn't about scare tactics. It's about perspective.

One of the things I enjoy most about visiting businesses is seeing how differently every owner views their operation.

To them, it's familiar.

They walk the same shop every day.
They drive the same yard.
They see the same equipment.

After a while, you stop noticing the little things.

That's true for all of us.

Sometimes it takes a fresh set of eyes—not because you're doing something wrong, but because someone else may notice opportunities, risks, or improvements that have simply become part of the everyday routine.

That's one of the reasons I like getting out of the office.

Insurance isn't just about applications and policies.

It's about understanding how a business actually operates.

Every visit teaches me something new.

And hopefully, I can return the favor by helping protect what someone has spent years building.

Sale day might be one of the best examples of what makes a community work.

You see months of effort from kids and families come together in one day.

You see local businesses show up and support them.

You see buyers, parents, volunteers, ag families, and community members all stepping in to make sure that hard work means something.

And what most people don't see is everything behind the scenes that got them there.

The early mornings.
The feeding.
The cleaning.
The practicing.
The setbacks.
The long days.
The people who helped along the way.

That's the part I love.

Insurance may be what I do for a living, but the interesting part has always been the people — learning what they care about, what they're building, and what it takes to keep all of it moving.

This year I also had the chance to experience fair week from behind the camera with Mica Media, which gave me an entirely different view of just how much work, emotion, and community goes into making a week like this happen.

Sale day was probably the perfect ending to all of it.

Businesses don't just operate in a community.

They help build it. ❤️

And to every kid who put an animal through that sale ring — congratulations. You earned that moment.

Today, 4-H and FFA members are hard at work getting their animals settled into the fairgrounds and competing in the horse events. Best of luck to all of the exhibitors this week—we know how much time, dedication, and hard work goes into preparing for fair!
