October is Fire Prevention Month, and it’s a great reminder that fire safety is something we should stay ahead of—not wait for. With a home fire reported every 96 seconds in the U.S., a few simple steps can make a big difference in keeping your household protected.
Here are a few safety tips our team encourages you to review:
• Know the leading causes. Cooking and heating remain top causes of home fires. Stay in the kitchen when cooking, keep flammables three feet from heat sources, and check cords for wear.
• Test your smoke alarms. Make sure they work monthly, swap batteries each year, and replace any alarm that’s 10 years old or older.
• Practice your escape plan. Identify two exits per room, ensure windows and doors open easily, and pick a meeting spot outside.
• Learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. And when in doubt, get out and call 911.
• Build safer habits. Keep heating devices attended, secure matches and lighters, avoid overloaded outlets, and turn off appliances before leaving home or heading to bed.
Fire prevention is a shared effort, and small habits truly matter. If you have questions about fire safety, your local fire department is a great resource.
