A beautiful twenty five foot Beech tree that I had planted in a customer’s yard died. Suddenly. I had seen it just a week or so prior and it looked great – healthy and robust, but now all of the leaves were brown and withered.

When I found out that the exterior of their house had just been painted, I put two and two together. Somebody must have spilled paint thinner near the tree. How sad.

This should be obvious, but I will say it anyway: never pour any foreign substance near a specimen tree – or anywhere on the ground. It can kill everything in its path - especially a caustic chemical like paint thinner or gasoline. But it also goes for other familiar substances or liquids such as wine, salt or chlorinated water.

My wife loves Weeping Willow trees. She has been asking me to plant one or two near our pond for several years.

They are graceful trees, excellent for shade because of their wide spreading canopy, that readily blocks the sun. When in full foliage the branches reach down from the broad canopy towards the ground (thus “Weeping”) and provide gentle movement in a light breeze.

The Weeping Willow grows fast and heartily in a variety of soils, although they do particularly well near water – like next to a pond, however they can tolerate some drought conditions.

Unfortunately, when I initially planned our landscape years ago, I did not have a Weeping Willow in mind, but, as you may have surmised, I will be doing some rearranging in order to design and make room for a Weeping Willow just for my wife.

Before the holidays, I was asked to look at a tree job on our neighbor's property. She was unhappy with the messy look of the border of her property where many sapling trees had significantly grown over the years crowding the larger, mature trees that had been there for years.

She had requested that I remove several of the mature trees thinking it would make a strong impact on the look of the over-crowded area.

I cold see the mature trees already there giving the area "bones" capable of leaving a dramatically richer view if left there unfettered and uncrowded. I suggested removing just the growing saplings and lower brush, allowing the existing older trees to stand out un-obscured.

On completion of this project the customer was very happy. The existing mature trees were actually beautiful. They just needed to be seen.

Please be sure the Tree Company you hire to work at your property is a Certified Arborist and FULLY INSURED. It is dangerous work, and homeowners are vulnerable if the tree company they hire does not have full insurance coverage. A certified arborist is also less likely to have mishaps on the job.

When I am asked cut down a healthy tree that is not harming any other plants or trees, not creating a potential danger, or not an Invasive species, I will usually decline. Healthy trees provide so many benefits to the land, such as helping to reduce surface water runoff from storms - decreasing soil erosion, the environment – they absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, from the air and release oxygen. Trees create an ecosystem to provide habitat and food for birds and other animals. People are able to enjoy the various sounds these creatures make while going along with their lives.

Besides being beautiful to look at, trees have been proven to have positive effects on humans. For instance, hospital patients have been shown to recover from surgery more quickly when their hospital room offered a view of trees. The presence of trees in urban localities educes slower heartbeats, lower blood pressure and more relaxed brain wave patterns.

You get the point. There are thousands of ways trees benefit the earth and all its creatures. For this reason, I respect the dignity of every tree and try to pass along this viewpoint of trees whenever I can.
