Memorial Day is dedicated to honoring and remembering the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military. It originated after the Civil War and was initially known as Decoration Day, a time when Americans decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Over time, the holiday evolved to recognize all military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country.
