Before 1976, the federal fiscal year (FY) ran from July 1 through June 30. Congress changed the federal fiscal calendar to October 1 through September 30 through the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974.

The new schedule took effect with FY1977, giving Congress more time to work through the federal budget process before the start of each FY.

Now, October 1 marks the start of a new federal FY and a new year of federal spending and financial data. 📊✨
