🚨 Attention US college students, grads, and parents! Major changes are on the horizon for federal student loans. 🚨
A sweeping new federal education reform package, known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill," is proposing some of the biggest changes to college financing in years Whether you're currently in school or planning to go, here is what you need to know about the proposed overhaul:
✂️ New Borrowing Caps: The bill aims to eliminate Graduate PLUS loans for new borrowers Instead, it introduces strict lifetime federal borrowing caps: 100,000forgraduatestudents∗∗andupto∗∗200,000 for professional programs like law and medicine, with an overall lifetime limit of about $257,500
💳 Repayment Shake-up: To simplify the current maze of income-driven repayment options, borrowers would mostly choose between a standard plan and a new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP)
⏳ Longer Path to Forgiveness: Under RAP, your monthly payments are tied to your income and include interest subsidies to keep balances from exploding, but loan forgiveness wouldn't happen until 30 years—which is a longer wait than some current programs
While supporters argue these reforms will simplify a confusing system and encourage responsible borrowing, critics warn that stricter caps could make graduate degrees harder to afford for lower-income students and leave borrowers making payments for more years Current borrowers should stay alert, as many could eventually be required to transition into this new system
