Rhode Island Ranked Among Worst States for Doctors, New Study Finds

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island continues to rank near the bottom nationwide for physicians, according to a new report from WalletHub.

The study placed the Ocean State 50th out of 51, making it the second-worst state in the country for doctors to practice, ahead of only Hawaii.

According to the report, WalletHub evaluated all 50 states and Washington, D.C., using nearly 20 key metrics, including physician salaries, job competition, malpractice costs, and overall medical environment.

Rhode Island struggled across multiple categories. Physicians in the state rank near the bottom for wages, placing 48th nationally when adjusted for cost of living, while also facing some of the highest projected job competition in the country in the coming years.

The report also highlighted financial pressures, including higher malpractice-related costs and a less favorable overall medical environment, which includes factors like hospital systems and healthcare infrastructure.

This marks another year Rhode Island has landed near the bottom of the rankings, reinforcing ongoing concerns about the state’s ability to attract and retain doctors.

Nationally, states like Montana, Indiana, and South Dakota ranked among the best places for physicians, offering stronger pay, lower competition, and better working conditions.
