Life insurance comes with its own vocabulary, and half the confusion around buying a policy is just not knowing what the terms actually mean.
Here's a quick glossary:
Beneficiary — the person or people who receive the payout when you pass away. You can name more than one, and update it whenever your life changes.
Premium — what you pay, monthly or annually, to keep your policy active. Miss enough payments and your coverage can lapse.
Rider — an optional add-on that customizes your policy, like accelerating benefits for a serious illness or waiving premiums if you become disabled.
Cash value — a savings-like component built into permanent policies. It grows over time, and you can often borrow against it while you're still alive.
