Driving Uber Black, Lyft Black or running a limo in California? 🚘

Need an SR-22 in California but don't have a car? You can still get your license back.

A non-owner SR-22 policy is made for this. It covers you when you borrow a friend's car or rent one, and since it's liability only, it usually costs less than a regular SR-22 policy.

A few things to know:

Your SR-22 in California is only as good as the policy behind it

Getting the SR-22 filed is the easy part. Keeping it clean for the full term is where a lot of drivers get tripped up, and that is what puts a license back in jeopardy.

Here is what most people are not told when they buy one:

If the policy cancels for any reason, even a missed payment, the insurance company is required to notify the DMV. That can restart the suspension you just cleared, and in many cases the three-year clock starts over from the beginning.

Switching insurers mid-term is fine, but only if the new SR-22 is filed before the old policy ends. A gap of even a few days counts as a lapse.

The SR-22 is not a separate policy. It is a certificate attached to your auto or non-owner policy. If you sell your car and drop coverage without replacing it, the DMV finds out.

Once your term is up, the requirement does not always fall off by itself. Check with the DMV before you cancel anything.

Got an SR-22 notice from the DMV? It sounds worse than it is.

An SR-22 isn't a separate policy. It's proof of financial responsibility that your insurance company files with the state, and we can usually get it filed electronically the same day you call.

California's current liability minimum is 30/60/15: $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, $15,000 property damage. Most drivers keep the filing in place for three years.

Getting auto insurance in California with a foreign or international license? Here is what to have ready so your quote takes minutes instead of days.

Most delays happen because a driver calls without the right paperwork. Have these five things on hand and we can usually quote you the same day:

Need an SR-22 but don't own a car? You can still get one.

A lot of people think you have to own a vehicle to file an SR-22. You don't. A non-owner SR-22 is a liability-only policy for California drivers who have to file with the DMV but don't have a car in their name. It covers you when you drive a borrowed car or a rental, and it gets your license reinstated. It doesn't cover the car itself.

Since there's no vehicle on the policy, it's usually the cheapest way to meet the requirement. Most drivers pay $25 to $75 a month, often 30 to 50 percent less than a standard SR-22.
