If you’re even thinking about buying a home in 2026, don’t wait until you apply. Start preparing now.

Here’s what actually moves the needle:

1️⃣ Check your credit report
Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and pull your report for free. Look for errors, duplicate accounts, or old collections that shouldn’t be there. Disputing one mistake can boost your score faster than you think.

2️⃣ Lower your credit card utilization
Your balances matter more than your limits. Keep cards under 30% usage — ideally under 10%. Even small paydowns can improve your score under the FICO model lenders use.

3️⃣ Set up automatic payments
One 30-day late payment can drop your score significantly. Protect yourself by turning on auto-pay for at least the minimum due.

The buyers who win in this market aren’t lucky.
