90-Day Reality Check: I'm Not That Kind of Consultant

Hit my first 90-day sprint mark this week and had to laugh at myself. I spent the last three months trying to be the consultant who's everywhere at once. Company pages, personal pages, multiple platforms, perfectly branded graphics for everything.

Turns out I was doing exactly what I tell my clients not to do: spreading myself across too many systems instead of focusing on what actually moves the needle.

The irony wasn't lost on me. Here I am, helping business owners get unstuck from being the "go-to person" for everything, while trying to be the go-to person for every piece of content on every platform.

So I'm taking my own advice. I'm getting out of my own way and focusing on what I do best: having real conversations with business owners about building systems that work without them.

You'll find those conversations happening on my personal LinkedIn page, where I share what actually worked (and what didn't) during 14+ years of operational leadership. No fancy graphics, no consultant-speak - just straight talk from someone who's been in your shoes.

Connect with me personally: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danskilliter/

Or if you're ready to talk about getting unstuck from your own operational trap, reach out directly: [email protected]

Sometimes the best business strategy is admitting when you're overcomplicating things and trying a completely different approach.

Grateful to have moderated this morning's exit planning discussion for Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce!

The best part? Watching business owners dive into the real questions about succession planning. When you get people talking about what actually keeps them up at night, that's where the valuable conversations happen.

Thanks Holly Dye, Jason Harris, CPFA®, NQPC®, CEPA®, and Jeff Williams for bringing the expertise, and to everyone who made it so interactive. This is just the beginning of these important conversations.

Tired of being the person who can't take a real vacation?

After 14 years of being that person myself, I just went through my own business transition and learned some things that could have saved me years of stress.

Join me and Buckeye State Bank Thursday 7/31 for lunch. You'll discover why most business owners feel trapped by their own success - and the straightforward approach to building real freedom without losing what you've worked hard to create.

Who's hungry for real solutions from someone who's actually lived this before?

Ever notice how video meeting backgrounds can make or break your professional presence?

My friend Katie Hahn learned this the hard way during her days as a weather person at FOX 36 Toledo . Turns out, thin blonde hair and virtual backgrounds don't mix well - the technology would blend her hair right into the forecast map, leaving just her face floating awkwardly on screen!

For her business, Katie adapted by using staged, physical backgrounds instead. She understands her tools, knows her limitations, and always has a backup plan.

Sound familiar?

The same principle applies to your business. Understanding your technology, knowing what works (and what doesn't), and having contingency plans isn't just smart - it's essential for long-term success.

Whether it's your video setup or your transition strategy, preparation beats improvisation every time.

What's your go-to video meeting background? Did you learn your preference the hard way?

On this Fourth of July, ask yourself: Are you truly free within your own business?

As business owners, you've built something meaningful - creating jobs, serving customers, and contributing to your communities. That entrepreneurial spirit embodies the very freedom our founders envisioned.

But are you truly free?

Many successful owners find themselves trapped by their success - working tirelessly, with operations that depend entirely on their presence because "only you know the right way to handle it". Sound familiar?

True business freedom comes when your company can thrive without you at the center of every decision. When you've built transferable value that gives you options: stay, sell, or transition on YOUR terms.

This is where working with a Certified Exit Planning Advisor makes the difference. We help you identify and strengthen your business in ways that create genuine business independence. Starting early gives you time to implement changes strategically, not reactively.

Three signs your business is ready to bring greater freedom:
->Key processes are documented and repeatable
->Revenue doesn't depend on a few major clients
->Your team can operate effectively in your absence

The owners who start this process early discover something powerful: enhanced business value doesn't just prepare you for exit - it creates the freedom to truly enjoy owning your business today.

What does true business freedom mean to you?

Business owners are asking me: "Should I be investing in AI to increase my company's value?"

Here's what I tell them: AI investment without strategy often destroys value instead of creating it.

The difference? Five essential pillars that turn AI from a cost center into a value driver:

→ Transparency: Documented systems build buyer confidence
→ Accountability: Clear governance attracts quality investors
→ Bias Mitigation: Reduces operational risk and future liability
→ Data Governance: Strong protocols prevent costly breaches
→ Human-Centric Design: Enhances your reputation with customers and talent

The goal isn't just AI adoption—it's building transferable value that survives your transition.

Great discussion on this at the Exit Planning Institute SE Michigan Chapter meeting this morning.

Which of these areas would move the needle most for your business? I'm curious about your experience.

🚀 Building a Buyable Business: Seven Essential Traits 🚀

I read an insightful post about the seven traits of building a buyable business, and one trait stood out: make yourself optional. This principle transformed my business approach. When your business can operate without your constant presence, it removes bottlenecks and enables growth.

I've learned that empowering your team and systems creates both efficiency and innovation. This allows focus on strategy rather than daily operations.

Also, keeping your finances clean is crucial - it attracts buyers and provides clarity on business health.

💬 Which traits impact your business most? Let's discuss below!

I used a hammer—but what I really built was momentum.

When we moved into our house in 2021, we had a vision for our awkward mudroom. But like many visions, it was an idea but not an action plan.

During a career transition, I finally had the time—and the push—to make it happen. I’ve worked alongside true craftsmen, but never built anything on my own. Still, I made a plan and focused on one wall, one problem at a time.

The result? A custom space that fits our family—and a reminder of what it takes to turn vision into reality.

🛠️ Here’s what I learned:
- A clear vision fuels action—even when things get messy.
- Trial and error is a teacher, not a threat.
- Flexibility beats perfection every time.
- Learning from others shortcuts the process and elevates the result.
- It may not be flawless, but it works—and adds value to our daily lives.

Thank you to my partner, Hope Skilliter, for the time and garage, and to the pros at @2-Scale, especially Yundt and Joe Kowalewski, and 731 Woodworks for the inspiration and knowledge.
