A lot of people assume once their insurance policy is set up, they’re good to go for years.

But life changes pretty quickly — and some of the biggest things people forget to update are the same things that can impact coverage the most.

Things like adding drivers, remodeling your home, buying recreational vehicles, or even purchasing expensive jewelry or equipment can all change what your policy should actually look like.

It’s usually not intentional — people just don’t always think about insurance when those life updates happen.

That’s why checking in every once in a while matters. Sometimes a quick conversation is all it takes to catch something important before it becomes an issue later.

If you’ve had changes recently or even aren’t sure if something should be updated, we’re always happy to help walk through it with you.

Liability insurance is one of the most important parts of a policy — and also one of the most misunderstood.

A lot of people think it’s just “extra coverage,” but it’s actually what helps protect you financially if you’re held responsible for injuries, damage, or accidents involving other people.

That could look like someone getting hurt on your property, damage caused in an auto accident, or situations where you’re found liable for something unexpected.

It’s also one of those coverages people don’t think much about… until they actually need it.

The amount of liability coverage you carry matters too. In some situations, minimum limits may not go nearly as far as people expect.

It’s not the flashy part of insurance, but it’s one of the biggest things standing between you and a major financial hit if something happens.

If you’re not sure what liability coverage you currently have or whether your limits still make sense, we’re always happy to walk through it with you.

With the amount of rain we’ve already seen this year, flooding and water issues are becoming a very real concern for a lot of homeowners.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see is people assuming flood damage is automatically covered under their homeowners policy.

In many cases, it’s not.

Flood insurance is typically separate from standard homeowners coverage, and water backup or sump pump issues can also fall into different categories depending on your policy.

That’s why it’s important to understand the difference before something happens — not while you’re dealing with water in your home.

With how much rain we’ve already had (and storm season really just getting started), it’s definitely something worth thinking about.

If you’re unsure what your current policy does or doesn’t cover when it comes to flooding or water backup, we’re always happy to walk through it with you.

A deductible is one of those things people know exists on their policy… but don’t really think about until something happens.

The amount you choose can impact more than just your monthly premium — it can also affect whether filing a claim actually makes sense in certain situations.

For example, if the damage is close to your deductible amount, filing a claim may not benefit you the way people assume it will.

It’s also important to know that deductibles aren’t always the same across the board. Wind and hail deductibles, especially in Iowa, can work differently than standard homeowners deductibles.

Knowing what your deductible is now is a lot easier than trying to figure it out during a stressful situation later.

If you’re not sure what your deductible currently is or how it works, we’re always happy to walk through it with you.

Summer trips and long weekends are here, which means a lot of people are leaving their homes empty for a few days at a time.

Before you head out, it’s worth taking a few extra steps to help keep your home safe while you’re gone. Things like putting lights on timers, pausing mail or deliveries, checking your sump pump, and making sure garages or sheds are locked up can all help prevent issues while nobody’s home.

If you have security cameras, it’s also a good idea to make sure they’re working properly and fully charged before you leave. A dead battery doesn’t do much good once you’re already out of town.

It’s also smart to have someone you trust check in occasionally if you’ll be gone for an extended period of time.

Most people spend plenty of time planning the trip itself, but forget to think through the house they’re leaving behind.

But when it does happen, having the right information on hand can make everything a lot easier.

It’s one of those small steps that doesn’t take much time, but helps you feel more prepared no matter what comes your way.

If you’re not sure what you should have saved or where to find it, we’re always here to help.

Life has a way of changing without us always stopping to think about it. A new car, updates around the house, a different job, or even just shifting routines can all impact what you actually need from your insurance.

The thing is, your policy doesn’t automatically adjust as those changes happen. It’s worth taking a little time to make sure everything still lines up the way it should. And if you’re not sure where things stand, that’s exactly what we’re here for.

Having insurance is important — but having the right amount of coverage matters just as much.

If you’re underinsured and something major happens, your policy will only cover up to its limits. Anything beyond that doesn’t just go away… it becomes your responsibility.

That could mean out-of-pocket costs for repairs, medical bills, or liability situations that go beyond what your policy was set up to handle.

It’s not something most people think about until they’re in it — and by then, it’s too late to adjust.

That’s why taking the time to review your coverage and make sure it actually fits your life can make a big difference.

If you’re unsure where your coverage stands, we’re here to help walk through it with you.

When it comes to your auto policy, one of the most common questions we get is who actually needs to be listed.

A good rule of thumb is this: anyone who regularly drives your vehicle or lives in your household and has access to it should be listed.

That can include spouses, teenagers, or even other household members who may occasionally use the vehicle. It’s not just about ownership — it’s about access and usage.

If someone who should be listed isn’t, it can create issues if a claim ever needs to be filed. It’s one of those small details that can make a big difference when something happens.

If you’re not sure who should be on your policy, we’re always here to help walk through it with you. Give our office a call at (515) 928-2085 or visit www.heyerspearins.com to learn more.
