Core Value Check-Up #7: Being of service and doing good in the world

Wow, so this series has taken us way longer to complete than we expected! But, we’re still going. Here’s how we’re doing with Core Value #7: Being of service and doing good in the world

Harrison: What does this even mean? Can 1 person who isn’t a political, cultural, or business leader do anything that counts as service or good in the world? The short answer is yes, be the change that you want to see in the world. Live it out and let your inner light shine on others.

This is one of the hardest gut checks because it is asking how well do you live up to your ideal everyday? What percentage of your day do you, Harrison, image Christ to a point that others see him and not you? Better than I did yesterday and that will be my answer for the rest of my life.

As Mel Robins often says, be a hollow bone, a conduit for what needs to happen. I certainly have thoughts and goals, beliefs and values, and I do chase after them. But man, are they usually off base and I have to be humble enough to adjust course to where it should be. If I am not constantly reminding myself that I am here for service to help create a better world, I will quickly head in the wrong direction. But committing to a routine and a life based on values, kinda hard to actually find myself heading the wrong way.

Lauren: I think about this value as having a lot of layers. It’s not limited by scale. Some days, I am only of service to my immediate family. Other days, I have the opportunity to serve clients and members of my community. Other days, I get the chance to do something, like make a donation, that will go towards the good of people I will likely never know.

As a Christian, I aim to “serve the Lord with gladness,” knowing that every step I take matters to God and that I should do it with gratitude, even if what I need to do is not my favorite. This is not easy and a lot of times, I get bogged down with my to-do list or I get frustrated with whatever roadblocks show up during my day. However, there’s no limit to the amount of times I can let God reorient me and point me in the direction where I can be of the most service.

My days are so much better when I serve my husband and children with love and intentionality, instead of just going through the motions. Likewise, I find I have better interactions with clients when I approach them with a servant’s heart. This value is really about keeping your aim true, pointed towards being a value-added to the world, no matter the scale of your impact.

Today marks 5 years married to and what a wild 5 years it has been!

We spent the morning completing 's one- and five-year vision worksheets and found ourselves aligned in pretty much every category. It's such a blessing to have a partner I know I can count on and who is in step with me on this journey of business and life. Love you, wife!

🚀 Entrepreneurship & Potty Training: More Alike Than You Think! 🚽

We've been working on potty training with our 2-year-old daughter which got us thinking about the unlikely comparison between her journey and ours as business owners.💡 Who knew that being an entrepreneur is a bit like mastering the art of potty training. 🤯

📚 Learning & Growth: Just like toddlers learn a crucial life skill, entrepreneurs grow and evolve with every challenge they tackle.

🔄 Trial and Error: Potty training involves trying different methods; entrepreneurship involves testing various strategies.

💪 Patience & Persistence: The journey isn't always smooth. It takes perseverance to succeed in both endeavors.

🌍 Adaptability: Flexibility is key. Be ready to pivot when the unexpected happens.

🤝 Support System: Just as kids have parents and caregivers, entrepreneurs lean on mentors and networks for guidance.

🏆 Milestones & Celebrations: Celebrate those achievements, whether it's a diaper-free day or a major sale!

🌱 Independence & Responsibility: Both lead to newfound independence and accountability.

🎯 Risk-Taking: There's always an element of risk, but great rewards can come from taking chances.

📅 Adoption of New Habits: Building habits is essential for success, in potty training and in business.

🔮 Long-Term Vision: Both involve looking ahead to create something impactful and sustainable.

🙌 Who would've thought, right? Remember, while these are metaphorical similarities, both experiences teach us valuable life lessons.

👇 Share your thoughts! Can you think of any other unexpected parallels between life's experiences? 💬

🎒✏️📚 It was a big week for our family! Our son officially started pre-school, which came with some mixed emotions as any parent can understand!

🌈We are so happy to see our son growing up and becoming more independent, but of course, it's also bittersweet to watch our baby turn into a little boy with his own world to explore and learn from. 🤠

🌟 Being able to be present for these big milestones in our children's lives is a huge reason why we got into the life insurance business. We get to make our own schedule that allows for us to lean into what it means to raise the next generation. 🏫

If you have any advice for how we can make the most of this pre-school time, please share below! 🤗

Lauren here with a guest post on what I am listening to right now! Another new agent shared on a company Facebook group how scared she was of the phones, which I can completely relate to, so I took the advice of some powerhouses from like and who commented. Per their recommendation, I downloaded the audiobook of Go For No by Richard Fenton and Andrea Waltz.

I wasn’t expecting a parable when I started, so it was a pleasant surprise to realize the moral was wrapped up in the story! It made it so engaging and the two or so hours of audio flew by.

One of my biggest takeaways was “Eric’s” breakdown of people’s relationships with failing and how to transcend the ladder of failing.
1. ability to fail - 100% of people are able to fail
2. willingness to fail - 20% of people are willing to fail
3. wantingness to fail - 5% of people have a desire to fail with the faith that personal and financial success will follow
4. failing bigger and faster - if failing is good, then failing faster is better and if it’s worth failing at, make the goal as big as possible
5. failing exponentially - group failure leads group success

I’ve definitely been firmly camped out around “able to fail.” I am a terrible perfectionist and it often paralyzes me from trying new things I might not be immediately excellent at. However, this journey at , though unexpected, is proving to be the thing that is pushing me well out of my comfort zone and challenging me to embrace and even desire the failure that should accompany any learning experience worth having.

Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I get over my fear of failing so I can build this business with Harrison and change the lives of others we encounter along our journey!

Thanks to everyone who has wished me a happy “work anniversary” on LinkedIn! Your words of encouragement got me thinking and I wanted to share more about my journey these last two years!

August 2021: One year into not knowing what the future was for the first time and learning to identify as “dad. After 6+ months of 40ish applications per week and basically no job offers and very few interviews, I took the first option available. Four months into that, I knew it was not the future but I still didn’t know what was. After bonding with Jessica Volce over a past as accomplished Subway “sandwich artists” I went to and saw the possibility of the future unfurling before me.

But I didn’t know what to do with that. I passed my life insurance licensure exam on the first try thanks to Xcel and called Lauren to celebrate. Her midwife had just told her that our expected second baby could be born any moment and she wouldn’t be commuting back to work for some time. an infinite landscape of possibility spread before me in a manner that I had never seen nor knew could, but my focus was with my family and I had practiced that more than anything else over the last year.

August 2023: Lauren and I have unified on a path to a shared, desired dream for us as individuals, us as a married couple, and us as a family unit. While we are far short of the current set of goals, we are in the thick of stretching, growing, and being uncomfortable. We have created morning routines with time together and individually where we read Scripture and pray, listen to self-development books, exercise, and eat breakfast. Getting time together and with our kids where we get to grow has its own set of unique challenges, but we feel it is a great way to model as parents.

So today really caught me off guard and I am honestly not sure why today is my “work anniversary” on LinkedIn, but so it is. Two years ago, I had dropped 40lbs simply by getting onto a normal sleep schedule and leaving a lot of stress at a job almost a year before. Now that I actually prioritize my health, I have dropped another 30+lbs and do not own clothes that fit very well. And I haven’t really changed my wardrobe in 10 years :0 I have read more books in the last year than in any year previous in my life. I journal and actually try to work through my emotions, not suppress them. The man today is vastly different from two years ago and that gives me great hope for the future.

We’re a little behind schedule with these Core Value Check-ups, but since we started the series, we’re determined to finish it! Fittingly, this week’s core value is “We act like owners because we own it.” What an appropriate opportunity to take responsibility for getting off schedule and for bringing things back on track.

Harrison:
Schedule and routine were not the common parts of the past 7 weeks or so, since July 4th. In that time was July 4th, the first line of our support network being out of town for an extended period of time, an extended family vacation for a week, my college buddy annual hangout, national conference in Denver which took up a week with travel, and our son’s first year in summer camp came to an end about a month before classes start. Let me first just say how blessed we are to be able to set such a difficult path to success. What boss could you go to and be like “uhhh don’t count on me in July, but you will see me in August.” None.

Being a business owner isn’t the common mindset. Something I have recently put to Lauren and myself is to treat HBNsurance as our third child and prioritize it as such. It deserves time with each of us as well as with all of us, and some of that needs to be fun, not just producing and building. Denver was a true work vacation and it was fun, but we still had to fit dials, appointments, sales, interviews, and building into that hectic schedule. I assure you that everything took a hit; there is no way to take that much time off and still be at your best. But it does help you find things to prioritize so that you can bring your best to everything you get to do because it is yours, you own it, so act like it.

Lauren:
Acting like an owner means showing up for OUR business. It means sticking to the schedule we’ve set, being accountable for the work that needs to be done, and keeping in mind that the success of this business is totally dependent on our activity and commitment.

Not going to lie, I have struggled with some serious imposter syndrome when it comes to this one! For a long time, I called it “Harrison’s business” but he firmly reminds me that it is OUR business. It is the financial lifeblood of our family and it is what does and will continue to make so many things possible for us. I have to remember what a good employee I was for others so I can step up and be an even better owner for us!

This life isn’t for the faint of heart! We’re definitely facing our share of trials and tribulations building this business, but how many other plug-and-play businesses can you get into for less than $1000 initial investment? We have the system and the opportunity to create a self-sustaining business that will provide for our family and the families of others who join us!
