Why do I like to do stewardship work? One of the reasons is that giving is important to me. Not just because the church needs finances, although that's also true. But primarily it's because I see giving as an act of worship-- to have made a conscious and prayerful decision what to give, to prioritize giving, and to actually do it.

One of the principles of stewardship is that we have to give enough in order for it to be an act of worship. It cannot be just a token. It has to be an amount significant enough to have real meaning, to represent something significant and important to my life. "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Whatever we invest our time, our talent, and our resources in is what we will come to love.

My wife and I have been tithers for a long time now. Tithing is a good principle and I would commend it to you. But if I could rewrite the Bible, I'd hold out for a principle of "generosity." Jesus did that with the case of the widow's mite. The significant thing is not if it is 5% or 10% or 20%. The question is: Are we giving enough that it makes a difference in our lives? Does it make a difference in the way we feel it or experience it? Do we know that we are giving up something else when we give God what we do?

The significant thing is not a certain percentage, but that we give enough that it matters in our life. God will bless that.
