I woke up this morning a bit early and decided to check out the Internet. The first thing I saw was an article about a GoFundMe for Eric Dane. And after having read the same thing about James Van Der Beek, I found myself thinking HOW? Was it a scam to get fans to pay some jerk a bunch of money? Or did these guys really need the help? And what about life insurance?!?

I did some research and realized that the accounts are real, and truly needed because these two men suffered from diseases that completely took out their savings, and very likely, any cash value they had available on any life policies, assuming they had any. And still, their families need help with final expenses and medical bills.

2 huge stars. Men with families who "Made it" and lived the "American Dream".

You can't get insurance AFTER a diagnosis or a major accident. (Usually). Don't wait till it's too late and don't rely on GoFundMe to care for your family when the worst happens. Please come talk to me. I am not into high pressure. But I believe deeply that everyone needs something in place.

Believe it or not, not everyone likes to talk to me. Shocking I know! But sometimes the subject of insurance just isn't one folks wish to dive into. But I really love educating people about it when they're open to it!

Something I didn't realize until recently is that so many folks think of Life Insurance as just money you get after someone you love passes away. Or money you leave behind. And while that is part of it, the COOL part is it can do a lot more!

Most people I know don't like to think about getting life insurance for their kids. It sounds morbid or feels like tempting fate. But the reality is that the things that keep an adult from being approved for life insurance, are usually diagnosed in our teens and early 20's. So by securing a policy early for your kids, you are locking in their ability to be insured! When a person is young and healthy, that is when a policy is the cheapest. It only takes about 30 minutes to sit down with me and provide this gift to your kids. And its not just money for after they're gone! We expect our children to outlive us by at least a couple of decades. But a policy while they are small can have big impact later! Did you know that some life policies double as a savings account that your child can borrow from later in life for things like school, and cars and homes? These policies have real, functional benefits while a person is still living!

Take a moment this National Safety Month to ensure you’re doing everything you can to stay safe while working on your farm. Here are a few quick tips:

◾ Get plenty of rest and take frequent breaks. Keep snacks and fluids on hand to keep your energy levels up and don’t push yourself past healthy limits! Accidents are more likely once fatigue sets in.

◾Tell your family and employees where and when you’re working. Be sure to also carry a cell phone or walkie-talkie in case you need help.

◾ Train yourself and your employees on how to safely handle chemicals and how to respond to an emergency.

Planning some fun at home this summer? Make sure your backyard is safe for all your favorite activities by using this summer safety checklist.

Pool safety
• Never leave children unattended
• Kids should never be alone in or near a pool (even if they know how to swim)
• Sign your kids up for swimming lessons

Learn emergency skills
• Young children should learn when to get help. Older children and adults should learn CPR and first aid
• Keep a first-aid kit, ring buoys and reaching poles nearby. Easy access to these items could be lifesaving

Install a safety fence
• Make sure your pool safety fence covers all pool sides and has self-closing gates. Also, install locks and alarms on doors with pool access.
• Create and post safety rules and enforce them.

Trampoline safety
• Add safety features
• Make sure your trampoline has padding and netting. An enclosed trampoline can help prevent falls
• Maintain your trampoline
• Inspect your trampoline regularly for missing pads, tears, exposed springs and other issues that could cause injury
• Enforce safety rules: Only one jumper at a time to reduce risk of injury

Playground safety
• Inspect your playground equipment regularly
• Create a safe landing
• Teach playground rules
• Supervise young children at play

Review your home liability insurance limits

Even if you follow all these tips, accidents happen. Keep your liability insurance coverage updated (and consider adding an umbrella liability policy). If you add a pool, trampoline or playground to your yard, meet with your insurance agent to see if you need to increase your home liability coverage. Stay safe and have fun this summer!
