On May 15, 2015 my brother Brett Rainey was riding his motorcycle on Route 110 in Huntington Station, N.Y. Heading north at around 5:15pm on a Friday evening. A minivan driven by a young man was heading south and turning left into the Best Buy parking lot. My brother crashed into the passenger side of the van head on. There was no way for the young man to have seen my brother coming since there wa
s so much traffic. Also Brett couldn't have known someone would be turning at that time...it was a tragic accident. As neither are to blame, we do however blame the DOT for not having a traffic light there. It's an incredibly dangerous intersection as we all know if you live in this area. There are always pedestrians crossing over 110 going to Brendels, Chase Bank, and The Shops at Walt Whitman mall. Cars are always speeding down the road, making illegal turns and disregarding the pedestrians making for a very dangerous situation. As we have been to this spot many times to pay our respects to Brett, we can see how scary the intersection is. We've met so many people who have stopped to speak with us and pay their respects even though they didn't even know him. In our conversations with them everyone has said how much they hate that intersection and the town needs to put a traffic light there. I know there has been a few requests to get a traffic light there but it was declined because of lack of funding and they claim the traffic lights are to close in proximity. This seems ridiculous because there were traffic lights that were installed recently that are way closer to each other than this would be. So that's it, we are fighting to get a traffic light at the Best Buy intersection in Brett's memory and save lives and save others from the pain of losing a loved one in another tragic and needless death.
