Jim Savage Western Art and Gift Gallery A tale of The American entrepreneurial spirit for today from Jim Savage's Western Art Gallery..

Growing up with the Jim Savage Art and Gift Gallery in the lower level of our home I have many memories of the travelers or local art enthusiasts who supported the Gallery. I receive many inquiries about my father's wood sculptures and paintings with regard to present value for insurance or resale. I receive questions about my artwork and the other artists that showed in the gallery while we were

open for business. The early 1970's through 2000 during and after my fathers death from cancer the gallery had the spring and fall showings. My inbox receives visitors' stories with my father in his studio or at an art show. My dad and mom began with a dream to open the Western Art and Gift Gallery of Sioux Falls, SD. They left a tale of The American entrepreneurial spirit we are still a part of today.

Wooden peach crate boxes were transformed by my father, Jim Savage. Instead of medal airplanes or cars he envisioned from the history books intricately detailed American pieces. All hand painted and hand carved horses with tack made from leather laces. Even the horse’s turn head is keeping an eye on the horse next to him.

This unique and rare piece of Americana is ready to move into your heart and home.

If you were a regular in the Western Art and Gift Gallery in the earliest years, 1970, you may recall these reproductions. They were done by the Polytron Corp. of Virginia from Jim Savage’s original sculptures.

Recently The Old Pioneer Woman was discovered in a thrift shop. I forget about these pieces until someone posed a question about their recent thrift store “find.”

Jim Savage created owls like this from the slender red cedar branch cores. The light tones of red cedar weather away in time to leave just the reddish center which pests avoided.

“I have a small wooden owl Jim made back in 1975. My dad got it from somewhere and it has been in our home since the early 1980s. I still have it on my entertainment center.”..WAG Visitor Comment

Pictured below left, is the bottom of the owl sculpture showing the original Jim Savage Western Art and Gift Galley label. The right, is the actual owl sculpture approximately 3-4” tall.

I never know when someone may uncover another masterpiece of my father’s. He would be delighted to know people are still enjoying his artwork. Thank you for sharing the following with me. . .

“Good afternoon. I just found this beauty at an antique store in Sioux Falls. I feel lucky to have been able to purchase it!”

So happy you rescued this from the antique store. Enjoy!

Recently I was asked about “the value” of a print called, MAJESTIC WATCH.

The value of my father’s works are what you or the potential buyer is willing to pay for it. Below is an article addressing the value of an artist’s body of work. Artwork is a purchase of the heart not typically an investment to boost your personal assets. Happy Holidays to you and yours!🎄

Q: I bought six paintings from a pretty well-known local artist over a twenty year period during his career. He's pretty old now and I'm starting to think about selling. When's the best time to do that? Should I wait until after he dies? Will I make more money that way?

One of the biggest compliments an artist receives is purchasing their work.

Small Business Saturday. Get out and support the local economy one purchase at a time.
