Wooden peach crate boxes were transformed by my father, Jim Savage. Instead of medal airplanes or cars he envisioned from the history books intricately detailed American pieces. All hand painted and hand carved horses with tack made from leather laces. Even the horse’s turn head is keeping an eye on the horse next to him.

This unique and rare piece of Americana is ready to move into your heart and home.

Welcome, come on in, Jim and Shirley Savage began their quest, circa 1970. Jim would recreate the Wild West in old cedar fence posts from the West River area of SD. While Shirley handled the marketing end of the business.

If you were a regular in the Western Art and Gift Gallery in the earliest years, 1970, you may recall these reproductions. They were done by the Polytron Corp. of Virginia from Jim Savage’s original sculptures.

Recently The Old Pioneer Woman was discovered in a thrift shop. I forget about these pieces until someone posed a question about their recent thrift store “find.”

Jim Savage created owls like this from the slender red cedar branch cores. The light tones of red cedar weather away in time to leave just the reddish center which pests avoided.

“I have a small wooden owl Jim made back in 1975. My dad got it from somewhere and it has been in our home since the early 1980s. I still have it on my entertainment center.”..WAG Visitor Comment
