As I begin visiting with more and more people about Pasture Range and Forage insurance, it seems some salesmen have oversold this. This is not a money making scheme for ranchers.
This program is designed to balance out those drastic years of drought. There maybe 3 or 4 years that you have to be prepared to pay for the policy, just like any insurance, and yes, you will hate the added cost in those years. Then there are the years like last year and this year that you will wonder where you would be without it. Many of you know that answer.
We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars preparing for a really long, bad winter that comes maybe 2 years out of 10. Haying machinery has become a justified cost, year after year. The more expensive it gets, the more hay we want to raise to justify that up front cost.
What are we really doing to prepare for drought periods? We usually deal with some periods of drought 7 out of 10 years and 3 out of 10 are extreme drought conditions.
We have gotten way too good at just taking drought. More open cows, lighter calves, trying to live off old feed and hope next year is better. Yes, maybe even a bigger hay stack to hopefully get the cows back in shape from lack of feed all summer.
Insurance may not solve the problem, but it does allow us to be proactive and prepare for the next drought period that is sure to come. Give me a call and let's figure out a plan to reduce the risks of drought to your operation. (307) 272-8235.
