Is your advisor giving you bad advice?

I once asked my previous advisor whether I should buy gold at around $1,800 an ounce. He said he wasn’t a fan of gold and recommended I stick with the target-date fund in my Roth IRA. Fast forward three years, and gold has traded above $3,000 an ounce. I’m glad I did my own research instead of following that blanket advice, had I not, I would have missed out on this unique market opportunity.

That experience reinforced a key point: some advisors rely on a standardized, “one-size-fits-all” approach that can miss out on specific market opportunities. If you currently work with an advisor at one of the big investment firms, you’ve probably thought to yourself, “I don’t think they really understand me or my situation.” You’re not alone.

I’ve experienced this personally.

When my wife and I were discussing life insurance, she wanted a whole life policy as both of her parents were battling different forms of cancer at the time. Our advisor, who also worked with my in-laws and knew their medical situation, still tried to push a term policy.

We felt unheard, like we were being forced into a strategy that had nothing to do with our reality. Just what people “our age” were supposed to do.

That’s when we realized: many advisors are trained to follow the same script. And it’s not entirely their fault; the industry runs on uniformity over personalization.

I started my own business so I can be different. I can serve my clients based on what’s best for them, not what’s easiest to sell or the general standard to recommend.

I was told to be considered “diversified” in my portfolio, I just need to own different stocks and bonds across different sectors and governments. This is easily achieved through mutual funds and ETFs. On the surface that made sense to me, but as I started my personal financial journey I began to realize with the changing economy and technology, the financial industry became increasingly centralized.

As I set off on my own, I realized if I wanted to be truly diversified, I would need to expand my investments beyond my traditional financial accounts managed by the same big financial companies, into tangible assets that I can personally own. I knew that no investment is without risk. But by spreading my capital across a variety of assets, I would be giving my money multiple paths to grow. This is what led me to create my investment strategy which I call, True Diversification.

Working-class Americans are often left behind or overlooked in this industry. Either we don’t have enough money to be worth someone’s time, or we’re assumed to lack the education to make informed financial decisions. Having experienced this treatment firsthand, I realized there’s a real need for an advisor who’s willing to help people—regardless of their current financial situation—and who actually listens and guides rather than dictates what’s “best.”

Many professionals in this industry don’t want us to be educated. But I see things differently. I believe that by educating individuals and families, I can empower them to do more with their money than they ever imagined possible. When we invest beyond just standard retirement accounts, we open the door to becoming financially unbreakable.

At the core of my mission is building trust through transparency. While most advisors claim trust and transparency as core values, few are willing to share what they actually do with their own money. I come from a middle-class, blue-collar family where hard work was instilled in me from the day I was born. I often tell people the Underwood family motto is: “If you’re not at least five minutes early, you’re late.” I’ve seen firsthand the long hours and dedication that go into every dollar earned — and I’ve also seen the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck, sacrificing savings, and watching retirement slip away.

Growing up, I was taught the traditional mindset around money — go to school, get a job, buy a house, save for retirement. That formula had worked for generations, so it made sense to follow it. But as I got older, I realized those old rules didn’t hold up in today’s world. As a lifelong learner, I set out to understand how money really works.

The financial system isn’t what most people think it is — and the scariest part, we are never taught how it really works. The truth I uncovered led me to a new way of thinking about money and investing — a philosophy I now call True Diversification. Today, I’m on a mission to not only teach it, but to walk alongside others in their financial journey. This path is what ultimately led me to launch Truly Diversified Wealth Management.
