Just picked up a Shield nickel with beautiful rainbow toning. These were the first nickels produced by the U.S. Mint, replacing the silver half-dime denomination that had been in use since 1792. The government switched the 5 cent coin from silver to a copper-nickel alloy due to widespread hoarding of silver coins after the Civil War.

New acquisition - a colorfully toned 1946-S U.S. Walking Liberty half dollar. Not too often you see a Walker with color like this.

Check out this great example of crescent toning - this type of toning occurred over the course of decades while the Morgan dollar was stored in a canvas bag at a Federal bank. Another Morgan dollar was in between this coin and the inner surface of the bag, allowing only a small crescent of this coin to touch the bag. The sulfur in the bag caused this vibrant rainbow toning to take place on that part of the coin alone, while the rest remained untoned.
