What a day at the Belmont Stakes here in Saratoga! 🐎
My wife was definitely in the running for the best-dressed competition — I was just happy to be her plus-one.
But between races, I kept thinking about an article I posted yesterday whether this pullback in the AI growth trade is something we should be buying aggressively right now, or becoming more defensive.

Turns out horse racing and investing have some similarities, but there are a few very important differences that changes everything.

🇰🇷 The AI trade may be packing its bags and moving from Silicon Valley… to Seoul-icon Valley.

For 16 years, U.S. stocks have crushed Emerging Markets. That run may be ending particularly against Asian markets.

Two charts I can't stop looking at this week, both are ratio charts. (A ratio chart is dividing one security by another security to quickly gauge relative strength or weakness between the two!

📉 Chart 1: The S&P 500 / EEM ratio just rolled over hard. After a 16-year uptrend off the 2010 GFC lows, the ratio has broken its 50- and 200-week moving averages and is threatening the 16-year uptrend channel. A monthly close near 105 confirms the regime change.

📈 Chart 2: The KOSPI (Korean stock market) / S&P 500 ratio is testing a downtrend line that has held since the late 1980s. A 37-year downtrend. If it breaks above 1.10 on a monthly close — it's officially game on in Seoul-icon Valley.

What's driving it? South Korea sits at the heart of the global HBM and DRAM supply chain — the memory chips that make AI possible. Samsung just crossed a $1 trillion market cap. Korean semiconductor shipments surged ~150% YoY in the first 10 days of May. Goldman has now raised its 2026 Korea earnings forecast three times this year — most recently to 130%.

This isn't really an EM story. It's an AI infrastructure story. And the capital is voting with its feet. We're planing to increase allocation to Emerging Markets, and particularly South Korea for clients on Inside Edge Capital!

I can’t tell you how many clients we’ve worked with in this exact situation. There’s hope. I think we’re in a AI-driven secular bull market with a lot more money to make. But I’ve been wrong and humbled many times. I’m assessing the market every single day challenging our outlook and when I’m wrong we can go defensive in our portfolios within a day! That’s active management.

Rereading this investment gem that reminds us there is NO eliminating risk in the markets. You face risk either now or later.

You’re either underexposed to equities eliminating the near-term risk, but face substantial risk of running out of money in retirement (principal depletion and / or inflationary erosion of buying power)

Or, you’re overly exposed to equities in the near-term facing risk now, but significantly reducing the risk of loss of purchasing power or principal in the long-term.

With all the hard work we put in try to navigate the zigs and zags of the markets, most important thing to remember is long-term equity returns far outweigh fixed income returns.
